X.400 Message Handling System
4
X.400 Protocols P1 Protocol The P1 protocol handles the layout of a message sent from one Message Transfer Agent (MTA) to another Message Transfer Agent. Using the “letter and envelope” analogy, P1 is the ‘envelope’ while P2 is the ‘letter’ or the message to be sent. P2 Protocol The P2 protocol is the way in which the originator and the recipient know the format of the message is being transmitted.
5
X.400 Protocols P3 Protocol The P3 protocol is how the Message Transfer Agent (MTA) communicates with the User Agent (UA). A UA prepares a message and using P3 submits it to the MTA. P3 is used to deliver a message directly to the UA from the MTA. It is not necessary to implement P3 from a point of view of interoperability between X.400 Message Servers. This function could be implemented for example as a Web Browser. P7 Protocol Because the User Agent is not always available there is a Message Store (MS). The P7 Protocol is for communication between the UA and the MS. . P7 provides facilities to select messages selectively from the MS. It is likewise not necessary to implement P7 for interoperability. This function for example could be implemented using data base access techniques.
