Religious Reasons -Henry VIII begins the Anglican Church- WHY? -Reformers want to rid the church of all Roman Catholic traditions - The church had become politcal in their opinion -Puritans wanted to purify the Church of England - Separate church and state and immune priests in eyes of the law individual and congregational control of religion

Indian Resistance -some cooperation but short lived -disease, land, and religion caused disputes. Colonists believed they had a God-given right to the land -Pequot War, 1637 massacre of Indians, over 700, several villages burned, captives sold into slavery abroad -King Philip ’ s War (Pokunoket Chief Metacom) lots of deaths on both sides but colonists win and Indian resistance fades. 14 months long, 12 towns burned
