6. CAUSES OF THE WAR. Imperialism. Nationalism. Militarism. Secret Alliances Immediate Cause. WAR IS THE ONLY WAY TO PEACE

7. IMPERIALISM Colonies were established in Asia and Africa by the Imperialistic powers like ENGLAND & FRANCE. GERMANY also made attempts to establish colonies. So there were clashes between Germany, England and France.

8. NATIONALISM BISMARCK occupied ALSACE & LORRAINE belonging to FRANCE. AUSTRIA with the support of GERMANY extended her influence in the BALKAN region. RUSSIA supported SERBIA against AUSTRIA.

9. MILITARISM. Competition to increase the possession of the deadly weapons. Compulsory military training to all the citizens of the European nations. SLOGAN of BISMARCK, “WAR IS THE ONLY WAY TO PEACE.”

10. SECRET ALLIANCES. TRIPLE ALLIANCE POWERS – Germany,Austria-Hungary & Italy. TRIPLE ENTENTE – England, France & Russia.

11. IMMEDIATE CAUSE. ARCHDUKE FRANCIS FERDINAND was the heir to the AUSTRIAN throne. He visited SARAJEVO, the capital of BOSNIA. He was assassinated by a SERBIAN on 28 th JUNE, 1914. AUSTRIA held BOSNIA responsible for the murder and declared war on SERBIA.

12. COURSE OF THE WAR. GERMANY attacked PARIS. Failed to capture PARIS because she was attacked by RUSSIA. AUSTRIA supported GERMANY and captured parts of RUSSIA, RUMANIA and SERBIA. JAPAN entered the war by capturing GERMAN colonies in ASIA. ENGLAND & FRANCE captured GERMAN colonies in AFRICA. RUSSIA withdrew from the war due to the internal revolution.

15. ENTRY OF U.S.A BRITISH liner-ship LOUSITANIA carrying the AMERICAN passengers and cargo was destroyed by GERMANY. AMERICA entered the war on the side of BRITAIN & FRANCE making them more powerful.

16. DESTRUCTION OF THE SHIP LOUSITANIA – MAIN CAUSE FOR AMERICA’S ENTRY

17. END OF THE WAR – GERMANY. IN 1918, combined attack was made on GERMANY. She and her allies began to collapse. KAISER WILLIAM II of GERMANY fled to HOLLAND. She lost all her colonies. She was made responsible for the war and was made to pay a heavy war compensation. She was de-militarized.

CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER OF THE IMPORTANT EVENTS 1879 – Alliance between Austria and Germany 1882 – Triple Alliance was formed. 1905 – Russian Revolution. 1907 – Triple Entente was formed. 28 th June, 1914 – Assassination of ARCHDUKE FRANCIS FERDINAND. 1914 to 1918 WAR. 1915 – Italy joined the war. 1918 – Combined attack on Germany, Bulgaria withdrew from the war, Turkey surrendered, Austria surrendered. Nov 1919 – Paris Peace Conference.
