2 Sojourner Truth’s owner, John J. Dumont, promised to let her free, but when he backed out on his vow, she fled, fortunate that she found Isaac and Maria Van Wagener, who bought her freedom.

3 Also names Isabella Van Wagener by the people who bought her freedom.

4  Born in 1797 in Ulster County, NY  Lived In damp cellar  First language- Low Dutch  Sold to John J. Dumont in New Paltz, NY

5 Sojourner Truth found out that her son had been sold out of the state (which is illegal) and she pressed court proceedings and won her son back.
