Significance of Petition Introduced the idea that the law was higher than the king Contradicted theories of absolute monarchs

Next… Parliament passes laws to limit royal power Charles tries to arrest Parliament members (they escape) People from London stormed the palace

Finally… Charles fled to Northern England Raised an army of supporters

English Civil War Roundheads- – Oliver Cromwell- (new general) – New Model Army- defeated cavaliers – Captured Charles I, held him prisoner – Put him on trial, found him guilty of treason EXECUTED

Significance? Revolutionary! 1 st time a monarch had been put on trial and EXECUTED by their own people
