2.  Anne Frank is one of the most discussed Jews of the Holocaust.  Anne was born on June 12, 1929.  She had one older sister, Margot Frank.  Her birthplace was Frankfurt am Main, Weimar Germany.  Her name is Annelies Marie Frank, but she went by Anne.

3.  Anne and her older sister Margot had many friends of nationalities. Their parents had taught them to respect and tolerate others.  Anne’s parents came from respected German families.

4.  On March 13, 1933, elections were held in Frankfurt for the municipal council, and Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Party won.  Antisemitic demonstrations began almost immediately, and the Franks began to fear what would happen if they remained in Germany.  The Franks were among 300,000 Jews who fled Germany between 1933 and 1939.

5.  Otto Frank (right) served in the German army during World War 1.  Otto fled to Amsterdam to set up a business called Dutch Opekta Company.  Later that year Edith, Margot, and Anne joined joined him.

6.  By the mid-1930s the Franks settled into a normal routine in their apartment at 37 Merwedeplein. The girls attended school. The family took vacations to the beach and their circle of Jewish and non Jewish friends grew.

7.  By 1942, Jews were being arrested for being Jews.  Many were forced to got o German labor camps.  Fearful for the lives, the Frank family began to go into hiding.

8.  They already had a place in mind- an annex of rooms above Otto Frank’s office 263 Prinsengracht in Amsterdam.
