15 Developing support for Speaking and Listening The role that speaking and listening plays in literacy development has been marginalised in the last decade or more. This situation is beginning to be rectified and the use of technology, radio and recording materials to enhance the learning experiences of children is becoming increasingly recognised and accepted. The time is right for practitioners to take advantage of these changes and to look again at the opportunities available to support dyslexic learners and students with language delay.

16 Thoughts to reflect on…. When are children experts and when do they genuinely have information to tell others? Where and when do children have opportunities to rehearse, practice and apply newly acquired speaking and listening skills?

17 Thoughts to reflect on…. How and where do children reflect on their use of speech and it’s impact on their learning? Talking about talking and listening- where is your metacognition? Teacher/ adults modelling speaking and listening Progression in speaking and listening

18 Thoughts to reflect on…. Love of language Freedom of expression vs. conventions of writing Owning their own voice and their thoughts and opinions Responding in a personal way Active listening for tone, rhythm, and content SELF CONFIDENCE
