2. WWI: CAUSES OF THE WAR & PROPAGANDA Objective: Students will be able to analyze U.S. involvement in the war by interpreting guided reading. Purpose: To be introduced to the issues surrounding the world and the United States prior, during, and after World War I and to interpret the overlying causes and consequences. Standard(s): 2.11 & 2.15 Historical Thinking Skill: Analysis & Interpretation. Cause & Consequence.

Failure to comply with rules or directions WILL result in disciplinary actions.  Classroom Behavior & Participation Update: I will both REWARD and PUNISH Classroom Behavior & Participation with points. I will REWARD based on participation, raising hand, discussion, answering questions, and good behavior. 4. WARM-UP: CNN STUDENT NEWS Receive Notebook and write NAME & CLASS PERIOD # on the front (if possible) and back. Write down facts as you watch the video. 1 point = 1 correctly written fact. I need to see at least (a minimum of) 5 facts. More facts may earn additional extra-credit points. What I want to see: Ex. The President was in Europe on Thursday. Give a thing, a place, and a time.

5. WARM-UP: PICTURE ANALYSIS: “THE SLEEPING COLUMBIA” American Artist James Montgomery Flagg drew some of the most famous propaganda posters in U.S. history. Examine this 1917 poster of a sleeping Columbia, the personification of America, and cite details from it as you answer the following questions. --------------------------------------------------- - 1. What are the visual symbols in this image, and what do they represent? 2. What message was Flagg trying to convey? 3. How does the poster reflect the events and political climate of the time?

6. - Mains reasons for U.S. involvement in WWI: 1. Unrestricted submarine warfare. - Sinking of the Lusitania (1915) - The “Sussex” pledge (1916) - Germany renews unrestricted U-Boat (submarine) attacks (1917) 2. American Propaganda. - Stressed German barbarism. - Posters depicting the Kaiser as some sort of madman. - Urged Americans to support allies throughout neutrality. 3. German Dictatorship - “Make the World safe for Democracy.” - Cultural ties. 4. U.S. Business Interests - U.S. trade w/ allies increased from 825 million in 1914 to 3.2 billion in 1916. 5. Zimmerman Note - Germany asked Mexico to enter the war against the U.S. We intercepted the note.

ASSIGNMENT: PROPAGANDA POSTER - Propaganda Poster 1.Receive blank paper 2.Color and organize a picture detailing propaganda of the time period of WWI. 3.Must be descriptive and use words / images from the time period / era. 4.Must be in color. 5.Must utilize the space and have a combination of words, images, figures and a theme.
