The Project  The purpose of the project is to create an interactive lesson to review/reinforce the concept of illegal file sharing and its consequences.  Students will identify copyright basics and the legal, technical and personal consequences of P2P file sharing.  The audience is a ninth grade Technology Literacy class.

10. Copyright Basics  Copyright is the legal right given ONLY to the creator of that work (book, song, play, etc) to reproduce, edit copies, distribute, sell, perform or display it.  The work must be in a tangible form to be protected or copyrighted.tangible

11. Tangible  A piece of work is considered tangible when it is in a form that can be touched or saved.  Some examples: Books, documents, anything saved to a disk or an audio/video device

12. Intellectual Property  Intellectual property is a creative idea that comes from your mind. It is intangible. intangible  The best way to describe it would be a “GREAT IDEA”

13. Intangible  When something is intangible, it means that you cannot physically touch it.  A GREAT IDEA is intangible because you cannot touch it. It cannot be copyrighted.  If you want to protect your work, you must save it physically or electronically.

14. Your Copyrights  Your work is automatically copyrighted when you put it into a tangible form. 15. Why Copyrights?????  Protecting creative works keeps the creative juices flowing.  How would you feel if someone took your ideas and used them without giving you credit?? Or even worse….sold them for $$$$$$$$$$$$!

16. Fair Use  Fair use is the legal exception to copyright. It allows for the “fair use” of copyrighted materials for the purpose of education, commenting, criticism or research.  WARNING: The amount of copyrighted work that you may use is very limited, you must give credit and you may not display the work publicly.

17. Public Domain  Creative works fall into Public Domain when they are not protected by copyrights. Check out “Is It Protected by Copyright?”  The amount of materials available in the Public Domain is limited.

18. P2P File Sharing  P2P, or peer to peer, file sharing is the use of software that allows computers to communicate directly with each other.  People with file sharing software can directly access each other’s computer to copy or download files without permission!
