1 Chapter 2-Understanding Educational Technology Issues and Trends
By Tiana Powell

2 Chapter Overview Chapter two explores educational technology in K-12 schools using a series of survey questions about the issues and trends you will encounter a a technology using educator.

3 A Career That Matters Teaching is a career that is essential to everyone- students, families, employers, and society as a whole. It requires constant learning. Convey essential academic material to students in ways they will understand, remember, and use. Teach and reach all students, each of whom has unique individual needs and interests in large and small group settings. Balance students outside of school influences

4 How Technology Changes Teaching
Technology allows for creative possibilities which makes it an essential tool in teaching. It provides a way to differentiate instruction to offer students diverse learning experiences. Motivate disengaged individuals Creates group and cooperative learning situations Allows access to academic information from multiple sources.

5 Computer Technology and Web 2.0 Tools
Computer technology is transforming every aspect of our society. Today the term technology is associated with the use of computers and digital tools. ICTs- Information and Communication Technology- are tools that encompass virtually everything we encounter when sitting down on a personal computer. For example: What is on a computer ( software and other applications) What can be accessed on a computer (Internet and web based tools) What can be connected to a computer (printers, scanners, digital camera, mp3 players, smart phones, touch screens, and other tools for learning.

6 6 questions What is your readiness to integrate technology into teaching and learning in schools? What are your reasons for wanting to use technology in teaching? What are your views of the barriers teachers face in using technology in classes? What are your goals for the types of technologies you will use in the classroom? What is your knowledge of the technologies students are using inside and outside of the class? 6. What are your ideas for the kinds of teaching methods you plan to use? Video

7 Responding to Innovation and Change
The Rogers innovation curve- depicts how individuals in business and management respond to change. It proposes that with every new idea there are always small percentages of innovators.

8 Identifying Groups of Technology Users
Digital Collaborator- uses online and mobile technology readily to create and share information with others Ambivalent networker- uses online and mobile technology readily to create and share information with others Media mover- uses online and mobile devices regularly as a way to connect with other people socially Desktop veteran- uses mainly desktop computer technology for work and communication but is less likely to use mobile devices like cell phones Drifting surfer- uses technology infrequently and then mainly to gather information Information encumbered uses mostly old media- telephones and print materials for information and does not often use the Web or mobile devices Mobile newbie- uses technology infrequently due to lack of knowledge about and confidence with the newest information devices. Technology indifferent- uses online and mobile technology on occasion but is content not to use modern technologies.

Information encumbered uses mostly old media- telephones and print materials for information and does not often use the Web or mobile devices Mobile newbie- uses technology infrequently due to lack of knowledge about and confidence with the newest information devices. Technology indifferent- uses online and mobile technology on occasion but is content not to use modern technologies.

10 Student Engagement with Various Pedagogical Methods, Including Technology

11

12 Using Technology to Enhance Teaching
Instructional practices- methods of teaching during which the teacher is interacting directly with students. ex. Accessing the web for class discussion, using computers for presentation or simulations, having students use handheld and wireless devices as part of group projects. Administrative/professional activities- are the planning, organizing, and recordkeeping activities teachers need to perform to support the direct instruction of students Ex. A teacher created blog or website, project grading rubrics, visual records

13 Barriers to Technology Use
Lack of Access ( improving) Teaching Schedules (Block Period) Curriculum Requirements Technology skills Organizational Support Personal Attitudes

14 DISTRIBUTION OF K-12 TEACHERS BY FREQUENCY OF TECHNOLOGY USE

15 Critics of Technology in Schools
Some educators believe that computer and other technological related inventions will not produce substantive changes in how teaching and learning take place in schools. Historian Larry Cuban has argued that computers have been oversold and underused. Video

16 Transforming Learning Environments with Technology
Traditional Classrooms Technology Based Classrooms Teacher centered learning Student centered learning Limited non computer based technologies(overhead, television, slides) Multiple computer based and internet accessible technologies Step by step learning following teacher directions and textbook progressions Flexible and spiral learning based on a combination of teacher directions and student interest. Emphasis on individual work and accomplishments Emphasis on collaborative work and group achievements Academic information from non interactive textbooks and encyclopedias Academic information from multiple interactive web based sources Memorization and recall of information Creative and critical thinking with application of information to real world issues and problems Assessment of learning based on test scores and other standardized measures Assessment of learning based on digital portfolios and student projects.

17 Summary Technology is a great advancing new tool in technology use. There are many barriers and reasons to why it is not being used as much as it should to increase teaching and learning experiences. TAKE THE TIME TO BECOME TECHNOLOGY SAVY SO THAT YOU ARE NOT LIMITING YOUR STUDENTS!
