2 l Background of 7th Framework programme (FP7) l Basic principles l Next calls for proposals with emphasis on maternal and reproductive health topics l Where is EU funding moving ? l How to apply successfully Main points

3 The Cooperation programme Thematic Priorities 1.Health6.1 2.Food, agriculture, fisheries and biotechnology1.9 3.Information and communication technologies9.1 4.Nanosciences, nanotechnologies, materials and new production technologies3.5 5.Energy2.3 6.Environment (including climate change)1.9 7.Transport (including aeronautics)4.2 8.Socio-economic sciences and the humanities0.6 9.Security & 10. Space2.8 Total for collaborative research €32.4 billion
4
4 Basic principles for prioritisation, calls, funding schemes, evaluation…
5
5 From policy to funding the best research projects lThe policy for Health research is described in the FP7 specific programme lEach year, a work programme is prepared by the EC, based on consultation of scientific community, and discussed with the Advisory Group and with the Programme Committee (MS & AC) lThrough calls for proposals the EC invites researchers to submit lThe very best projects are selected on the basis of evaluation by a panel of independent experts (peer review) lAfter negotiation of a grant agreement, a project is normally funded for 2-5 years.
6
6 Basic principles: l Annual calls – now only two-stage l Eligibility check (partners, limits, scope, deadline) l Evaluation by panels of independent experts overseen by Independent Observers l 3 criteria: Thresholds: Science & Technology excellence3/5 Implementation & Management3/5overall Potential Impact3/510/15 l Feedback: Evaluation Summary Reports (ESRs) Submission & evaluation

7 Funding schemes in the Health theme F unding schemes upper limits min. partners Large-scale integrating project (CP-IP)* €12m ≥3 Network of Excellence (NoE) €12m ≥3 Small- or medium-scale focussed research project (CP-FP) €3m or €6m ≥3 Coordination action (CA)** €2m ≥3 Support action (SA)** €0.5m ≥1 * for CP-IPs there is also a lower limit to the requested EC grant: €6m. ** for CAs and SAs there are some exceptions to the upper limit. Warning: the limits for minimum and maximum requested EC grant and for the minimum number of partners are eligibility criteria !

Aims to put best practices into best policies for more effective, efficient and equitable health systems. Collaboration between selected projects and ongoing EU funded projects welcome. One third of the EU contribution must go to capacity building. Maximum : 5 years’ duration Min. 6 different ICPC partners & 2 EU/AC partners from different countries. 16 engage in the dialogue on future research priorities Get involved with your country’s members of the programme committees the proposal must address the topic and the workprogramme the consortium of partners must be excellent and appropriate for the tasks (the proposal must address all 3 criteria Readability is as important as content and, of course, respect the basic rules (deadlines, N° of participants, ceilings, length, ethics…) Consider to register as expert for our evaluations: https://cordis.europa.eu/emmfp7/index.cfm?fuseaction=wel.RegForm Key issues
