Overview of EU FP7 IoT Project BUTLER BUTLER: uBiquitous, secUre inTernet-of-things with Location and contExt-awaReness – Started: October 2011 (Duration 3 Years) – Focuses context-awareness and security for IoT to enable smart life. – Objective 1: Improving/creating enabling technologies to implement a well-defined vision of secure, pervasive and context-aware IoT. Where links are inherently secure (from PHY to APP layers) applications cut across different scenarios (Home, Office, Transportation, Health, etc.), and the network reactions to users are adjusted to their needs (learned and monitored in real time). – Objective 2: Integrating/developing a new flexible smartDevice-centric network architecture Where platforms (devices) function according to three well-defined categories: smartObject (sensors, actuators, gateways), smartMobile (user’s personal device) and smartServers (providers of contents and services), interconnected over IPv6. – Objective 3: Building a series of field trials Which progressively integrate and enhance state-of-the-art technologies to showcase BUTLER’s secure, pervasive and context-aware vision of IoT Context Awareness & Positioning Technologies User Identity, Privacy & Security Semantic Awareness & Behaviour Modelling IoT Architecture, Services & Platforms

BUTLER’s Future Vision – Smart Life Local Social Networks Network of Vehicles Network of Devices Extension to Infrastructure

Overview of IEEE 802.15.8 (PAC) PAC: Peer-Aware Communications based on the awareness of their proximity for desired services in a distributed infrastructure-less wireless system – Scope: optimized PHY & MAC design to support Peer to Peer (P2P) wireless communication networks Application or context awareness Peer awareness in proximity Self organized and managed Scalability and flexibility Low latency Low power consumption Group communication Privacy and security Reliability

PAC’s Future Vision – Context-aware P2P Comm.

BUTLER and PAC – Technical Features PAC Features – Fast Neighbor Discovery without Association – Fast Association with Distributed Coordination – Peer to Peer and Infrastructureless Communications – Distributed Group Communications – Pervasive and Ubiquitous Communications without Centralized Coordination – Secure Distributed Communications e.g. Restricted Discovery and Open Discovery – Location-based Proximity Services – Context-aware Cross-Layer Communications Context-aware Service-oriented Peer Information Context-aware Service-oriented Discovery Context-aware Service-oriented Association BUTLER Features

BUTLER and PAC – Deployment PAC helps to support BUTLER more efficiently PAC helps to collect context and behavior information for BUTLER BUTLER facilitates to learn PAC user behavior and context to improve PAC performance including security and privacy BUTLER facilitates to enable smarter PAC applications

oneM2M Technical Requirement Consideration oneM2M service layer should support context information modeling oneM2M service layer should support context management – e.g. context collection, context analysis, context aggregation, context enrichment, etc oneM2M service layer should support context-awareness – Service layer functionalities can be dynamically adapted, re-configured, software-defined, and/or optimized based on context information – Service layer should support cross-layer optimization (i.e. with higher layers and lower layers respectively) oneM2M should support proximity-based P2P communications at service layer – e.g. M2M devices can communicate with each other directly – e.g. M2M gateways can interact with each other directly – e.g. M2M servers can connect to each other directly oneM2M service layer should support, enable, or optimize proximity- based P2P communications at lower layers

The BUTLER External Member Group External Member Group (EMG) should extent the reach of the project towards non project members Main goal is – to cover additional vertical use cases in the EMG not available in the project – To add additional technical experience not available in the project – To support for the planned field trials by providing equipment – To support the internal and external discussion on ethical issues driving the security implementation in BUTLER Interdigital Cooperation is one of the members of the EMG and is very actively working together with BUTLER – This presentation is the result of initial EMG discussions and thus not necessarily represent the view of all BUTLER partners 12
