UNIFE signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with NP-UIRE at the end of May 2012 Memorandum signed by Mr Gapanovitch (RZD) and Mr Poupart-Lafarge during the “1520” exhibition Key objectives: technical cooperation on a number of dedicated topics, exchange of information (IRIS, ERTMS, High-speed, cross-acceptance, etc.) Final conference of the EU-Russia Industrial Roundtable TF8, working group on Rail, October Today: EU-Russia Rail Research Workshop organised with the European Commission 

3 Introduction on UNIFE and EU Research
The railway supply industry invests around EUR 1000 Million each year in research and development. UNIFE represent an industrial sector which account for a total world market of EUR 146 Bn and provides 400,000 direct and indirect jobs in Europe Innovating and harmonising products and technologies are a necessity for the rail market to deploy all its potential, and for its stakeholders to deliver cost-effective services for intermediate and final clients. Rail transport in Europe is a future-oriented industry and is determined to offer an even more attractive, affordable, safe, clean, competitive, high capacity and reliable transport mode. The rail sector organisations, UNIFE, UIC, CER, EIM, EURNEX and UITP are cooperating in ERRAC, the European Rail Research Advisory Council.

4 Aim ETP (European Commission):
ERRAC in brief Set up in 2001 to enhance collaborative European rail research by: Building consensus among stakeholders. Improving synergies between EU, national and private rail research (identify priorities). Strengthening and re-organizing research and development efforts. Effective pooling of human and material resources. Launching ambitious co-operative research plans. ERRAC is ruled by a share of Chairmanship between Supply Industries, Railways operators and academia. Today it is chaired by Mr. Josef Doppelbauer (Bombardier Transportation), supported by two Vice-Chairmen, Mr. Andy Doherty (NetworkRail) and Mr. Manuel Pereira (IST). Aim ETP (European Commission): European Technology platforms were set up as a stakeholder for a sector, led by industry, with the objective of defining medium to long-term research and technological objectives and laying down markers for achieving them.

8 What are the upcoming industrial EU Research projects?
EU FP7 6th call proposals (to be submitted by November 14th and to start in mid/end 2015): ERTMS/CBTC proposal called NGTC (coordinated by UNIFE) Composite Carbody Shell proposal (coordinated by UNIFE) Infrastructure and Freight (UNIFE support in dissemination) Infrastructure and noise (UNIFE support in dissemination) ERRAC-Roadmaps continuation and SHIFT²RAIL link Horizon2020 (from 2014): Continuation of FP call projects and – pending submission of the JTI SHIFT²RAIL by the European Commission requesting the approval of Council of Ministers – Creation of a Joint Undertaking and Launch of related EU Research Project Demonstrations lead by industry (up to TRL 6-7 and 1Bn euros investment over 6/7 years)

9 Structure of SHIFT²RAIL
SHIFT²RAIL is one coherent and flexible research instrument managed in a Joint Undertaking to effectively implement the Horizon 2020 activities and objectives

10 What will SHIFT²RAIL deliver by 2020?
Implementable results through a long-term strategic programme built around key research clusters segmented in 5 Innovation Programs: IP1 - Energy & Mass Efficient Technologies for High Capacity Green Trains IP2 - Advance Traffic Management & Control Systems for the Improvement of Mainline & Urban Rail Capacity & Resilience IP3 - The Cost efficient - High Capacity Green Infrastructure IP4 - The IT Solutions for a Seamless Attractive Railway Transport System IP5 - The Technologies for Sustainable & Attractive European Freight Transport For each IPs Technology Demonstrators, each addressing specific topics, will integrate innovative technologies and develop prototypes tested in labs to generate future competitive sub-systems. All innovations from all IPs are validated, tested, and combined in a real rail environment to demonstrate the expected benefits at system level: we call that System Platform Demonstrations. Five System Platform Demonstrations will be developed on HIGH SPEED, URBAN/SUBURBAN, REGIONAL, FREIGHT TRAIN, and INFRASTRUCTURE platforms.

11 SHIFT2RAIL Innovation Examples
Mass efficiency of passenger cars through use of new materials, smarter and less aggressive running gears, improved efficiency of innovative traction and braking systems, etc. Next generation of ERTMS with traffic Management functionalities, interoperability between main line and urban rail traffic, etc. New innovative switches and crossings, innovative track design and materials, intelligent maintenance, etc. Seamless ticketing, advanced targeted passenger information systems, multimodal demand management, etc. Smart interoperable rail freight with new generation of the electro-pneumatic and disc brakes, new automatic couplers, etc.
