How it all began LinkSCEEM-1 project run from 2008-2009 – assessment of High Performance Computing (HPC) resources and users in the Eastern Mediterranean countries by HPC resources (status Nov 2012, source www.top500.org) Need for additional computational resources (regional survey LinkSCEEM-1) Saudi Arabia - 0.4%, FP7 under Grant Agreement Number: 222904

Project objectives Integrate regional computational resources Create user support and training programs Enable research of particular relevance to the region (Climate, Cultural heritage, Synchrotron) Build strong links to the European Research Area in accord with the European Neighbourhood Policy

Project Research Themes Cross sectional research – performance analysis and optimisation for community codes Climate – development of atmospheric chemistry climate models to study the Eastern Mediterranean region Digital cultural heritage – imaging and image processing of regional artifacts Synchrotron radiation data analysis – synchrotron data analysis and simulation on GPU systems Mediterranean and Middle East hot spot of ozone air pollution Polynomial Texture Mapping of a copy of an ancient coin from Petra, Jordan, depicting Alexander the Great or one of his successors

Access to HPC facilities within LinkSCEEM Regionally distributed LinkSCEEM e-infrastructure is being accessed through a joint call CaSToRC: – Cy-Tera (CPU/GPU cluster) – EUCLID (LinkSCEEM training cluster) BA: – Sun cluster (CPU cluster)

CyI Cy-Tera: QDR Infiniband network for MPI 350TB GPFS filesystem 30+ Tflop 36 Fermi GPU 12 Core Nehalem 116 dual 12-core nodes 4GB RAM per core BA 130 8-core nodes Total peak performance 11.8 TFlops Total memory 1.05 TBytes (132 * 8GB) DDR Infiniband @ 10 GBbps network Lustre filesystems Storage: 36 Tbyte

LinkSCEEM training events A mixture of events to reach new users and provide training in HPC related topics 9 Annual Events – Four 1-day user meetings – One 3-day general user meeting – One advanced 3-day cross-sectional workshop – One 3-day thematic workshop per field (Climate, Cultural Heritage, Synchrotron Radiation) Fellowships are offered for all workshops We aim to offer support that covers all basic cost
