8 EGYPT-SOUTH AFRICA JOINT SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH PROGRAMME Call for Research Proposals – 2012/13 The Republic of South Africa and the Arab Republic of Egypt signed an Agreement for cooperation in science and technology on 26 August 1997 as part of enhancing scientific and technological cooperation, the two countries have decided to jointly support researchers from public universities and public research institutes on an equal and mutually beneficial basis. In this call, the joint research project proposals shall be submitted to the relevant authorities in both countries for evaluation (The Ministry of Scientific Research in Egypt and the National Research Foundation in South Africa). Evaluation will be done according to the following criteria: Scientific and technical merit; Impact on bilateral science and technology relations; Significance for both countries; Potential for creating research; Quality and clarity of project presentation; Methodology; Suitability and feasibility; and Capacity/Student Development

9 For the purposes of this call, research projects falling within the following thematic areas/disciplines will be considered: Nanotechnology Remote sensing and space science ICT Biotechnology (food production, agriculture and health) Laser technology Energy Successful projects in South Africa will be funded up to a maximum amount of R300,000.00 over two years. Egyptians projects will receive the equivalent in the national currency. Researchers should therefore note that two separate budgets would be required from each side. Researchers from the sending country will be responsible for their own international travel and the hosting costs (local travel, subsistence, accommodation and ground travel).
