IWT programmes & JPI Role of IWT To support innovation activities in Flanders, which are based on knowledge development and diffusion of newly developed knowledge and which aim to create new products, processes, methods of labour organisation or services to meet economic and societal needs. 3

IWT programmes & JPI Funding by IWT: general principles IWT: responsible for evaluation, selection and follow-up bottom-up, no thematic priorities evaluation on 2 criteria: quality proposal (scientific/technological value) and utilisation (economic benefit) peer review: external experts( local & international) decision by Board of Directors 7

IWT programmes & JPI SBO programme: key characteristics Two key aspects: 1.High-quality strategic basic research with a dedicated focus on high-risk, inventive and original research. 2.Strategic interest and extent of the valorisation perspectives in the longer term in Flanders (economic or social/societal). Strategic basic research is not a goal in itself but an essential means to allow for an important new valorisation or knowledge utilisation (take up and use by economic or social/societal actors). 10
