This project has received funding from the European Union’s Seventh Programme for Research, Technological Development and Demostration under Grant Agreement No. 603458. This presentation reflects the views only of the authors, and the European Union cannot be considered liable for any use that may be made of the information contained therein. RISC-KIT Deliverable D3.1 FEWS-Coastal infrastructure Simone De Kleermaeker and Lora Buckman 31 oktober 2014 Progress Meeting, Bologna, 5 November 2014

Deliverable D3.1 What is Delft-FEWS? Extensions for RISC-KIT Documentation FEWS-Coastal Introduction of FEWS-Coastal Find this presentation at: https://publicwiki.deltares.nl/display/RISCKITPUBLIC/Demo+instruction+movies Table of content Progress Meeting, Bologna, 5 November 2014

One objective of WP3 is to develop an impact- oriented Early Warning System (EWS) for hot spot areas consisting of a free-ware Coastal FEWS system (D3.1) based on Delft-FEWS as a platform to construct a model train to predict detailed spatially-varying hazard intensities. This deliverable will be used in WP5 in two ways: as an operational EWS tool which provides input for emergency decisions, and as an ex-ante scenario evaluation tool to evaluate the optimal mix of prevention, mitigation and preparedness measures. Deliverable D3.1 Progress Meeting, Bologna, 5 November 2014

What is Delft-FEWS? DataHydraulic ModelsForecasts & warnings Delft-FEWS is a configurable shell in which data im- and exports, modelling and pre- and post-processing of data are managed (“data centric workflow manager”) Many inland (fluvial) and coastal applications worldwide. Observations and Meteo input Wave, flow and morphological models Visualization, output to DSS Progress Meeting, Bologna, 5 November 2014

Components of a FEWS system Core program Generic functionality: Visualisation General data import module Identical for all FEWS systems Freeware, but closed-source (license agreement) Maintained by Deltares, formal release schedule FEWS Configuration (XML) Customize generic functionality for each study site (templates will be available) Data feed routine (e.g. GFS for the area of Portugal) Model adapter to couple models (e.g. a SELFE model of Ria Formosa) Define visualisation displays (e.g. wind field, water levels, wave heights) Maintained by system user FEWS Binaries (JAVA) Progress Meeting, Bologna, 5 November 2014

Modular toolbox Delft-FEWS provides a generic functionality (modules) which can easily be configured and organized for specific applications (processing data, running models, …). Progress Meeting, Bologna, 5 November 2014

Importing and editing data FEWS provides in-build support for many common data formats. From FEWS, data can also be quality checked, edited and modified in various ways Extension for RISC-KIT: Import routines for: CS3xTidalSurgeTime MetOfficeWW3 Progress Meeting, Bologna, 5 November 2014

Processing data FEWS provides a lot of in- build functionality to process data: interpolation, extrapolation, user defined, statistics, and much more Extension for RISC-KIT: Example configuration for FEWS- Coastal (see demo) Progress Meeting, Bologna, 5 November 2014

Model adapters FEWS has an open interface to models: No model intelligence in FEWS All model intelligence in model adapters Simulation Delft- FEWS model OutputInput Model Adapter Model adapter is specific for a modelling software Model runs outside FEWS and can be any software you want Extension for RISC-KIT: Model adapters for: WaveWatch3 Delft3D (improvement) SWAN (improvement) Selfe, by Gael (LIENSs) Telemac, by Saul (IMDC) Lisflood-FP, by Willem (WMO) Continuum, by Mirko (CIMA) 14-18 April 17-21 March Progress Meeting, Bologna, 5 November 2014

Interpreting and disseminating results To interpret and dissiminate results, FEWS has a client application (Operator Client), exports to a range of external files and databases and exports to web-sites and apps Extension for RISC-KIT: Example configuration for FEWS- Coastal (see demo) Progress Meeting, Bologna, 5 November 2014
