The Imperfecto Progresivo (Past Progressive) is the past tense equivalent to the Presente Progresivo (Present Progressive). It is used to talk about actions that were ongoing at some point in the past. Presente ProgresivoImperfecto Progresivo Juan está bebiendo un refrescoJuan estaba bebiendo un refresco. Juan is drinking a soda.Juan was drinking a soda.

REVIEW: El Presente Progresivo If you want to describe an action that is going on right now, you will use the presente progresivo: Juan está bebiendo un refresco. Juan is drinking a soda. present tense form of ESTAR + participio presente (-ando/ -iendo)

If you want to express that an action was going on in the past, you will need to use the following formula: Juan estaba bebiendo un refresco. How to form the imperfecto progresivo: Juan was drinking a soda. imperfect form of ESTAR + participio presente (-ando/ -iendo)

Use of imperfecto progresivo: We usually use this form to talk about actions that were ongoing when something else happened. La señora Chavez estaba hablando por teléfono cuando su hijo se cayó. The event that interrupts the ongoing action will be expressed in preterit. Señora Chavez was talking in the phone when her son fell.

When the stem of an –”er” or “-ir” verb ends in a vowel, the “-i-” of “-iendo” usually changes to “-y-”: leer – leyendo incluir – incluyendo Remember that those verbs that change their stems in preterit, also have that stem-change in the present participle: dormir – durmiendo pedir – pidiendo mentir – mintiendo seguir – siguiendo venir - viniendo
