4 London Docklands Background/Context Is the semi-official name for an area in east and southeast London, England. It forms part of the boroughs of Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Lewisham, Newham and Greenwich. An urban development corporation set up by Michael Heseltine aimed to tackle the huge decline in the economy since closures in 1960. The docks were formerly part of the Port of London, at one time the world's largest port. They have now been redeveloped principally for commercial and residential use. It did, however, create conflict between the new and old communities of the London Docklands

24 Failures Property demands and rise in house prices has led to friction between new arrivals and old docklands communities. Unhappy with airport and associated problems eg noise and pollution Lack of appropriate jobs – financial /high skilled sectors. Culture and community spirit has been lost. Lack of affordable council housing built. It gas become a status symbol of Thatcher’s Britain and has been bombed by IRA.
