Tones Review / 四声复习 As you know and we have discussed many times, accurate tones are extremely important in Chinese. The ability to pronounce tones correctly, and to distinguish them when you hear them, makes the difference between okay Chinese and good Chinese. Work through this presentation to review and tune up your tones.

Tones Review / 四声复习 There are 4 tones in Mandarin, plus a neutral tone. When writing pinyin, we can represent the tones in one of two ways, either with a number or with a diacritical mark, as follows: 高 gāogao11 st tone 忙 mángmang22 nd tone 好 hǎohao33 rd tone 累 lèilei44 th tone 吗 mamaneutral (Note that neutral tone is sometimes written as ma5.)

Tones Review / 四声复习 One way of thinking about the sounds of the four tones is by using the English exclamation “man”: First tone, a high and even tone: Oh, mān, why did you do that?!?! Second tone, a rising tone, as in a question: What did you see, mán? Third tone, a flat, dipping tone: Come on, mǎn, you can do it! Fourth tone, a falling exclamation: Màn, is that hot!

Tones Review / 四声复习 Rules: When 一 yī is followed by a fourth tone, it changes to second tone. When 一 yī is followed by a first, second, or third tone, it changes to fourth tone. When 一 yī is used in counting, or when it occurs at the end of the word, it remains first tone.

Tones Review / 四声复习 Now that you can distinguish between the 4 tones, and we’ve reviewed the tone changes and listened to combinations, let’s see whether we can distinguish tone combinations, which is how we normally encounter tones. Remember that there are 20 combinations of two tones: four possibilities for the first, and five for the second (including the neutral tone). On each screen, click on the icon to hear as many times as you need to, then choose the correct combination.
