Task (5 minutes) Which elements of the Band 3 criteria are being met, and where? Example A Source 1 contrasts two colours to reinforce that the website compares things. These colours are also the main colours of the company brand, so you instantly know who they are when you see it. The word ‘ATTENTION!’ is big, bold, capitalised and emphasised by the exclamation mark to draw the reader towards the key message of the text. The meerkat is dressed in a sophisticated way even though he is a silly animal character, which makes the reader think the company is also sophisticated, but not without a sense of humour. Task (5 minutes) Which elements of the Band 3 criteria are being met, and where? Example A (continued) In comparison, source 2 also clearly shows that the website compares things because the man is holding his arms out in a way which makes you think he is weighing up options. The fact that the ‘gocompare.com’ logo appears above each hand implies that they are the the only option. Furthermore, the character is, like the meerkat, dressed smartly despite being a very silly man with a ridiculous grin on his face. Again, this suggests that the company is smart but friendly and humorous. Task (10 minutes) How could this answer be improved? Example B Source 1 has two different colours in the background which are the main colours of compare the meerkat. The word ‘ATTENTION!’ is big and bold which has an effect on the reader. The meerkat is a silly animal character which will make the reader laugh. It says ‘for cheap car insurance’ which makes the reader know what the company does. Source 2 is all white and has the company logo on it twice. The man’s tie matches the logo. He is smiling because he thinks go compare is really good. He is holding up his hands to celebrate how good they are. His moustache is silly which will make the reader laugh.
