“Passover” of judgment – Release one prisoner – Political tactic? Pilate was probably not a big fan of the custom – Guilty criminals being released into the public! – This time was different!

He is a notorious prisoner (Mat 27:16) An insurrectionist (rebel) (Mark 15:7) A murderer (Mark 15:7, Acts 3:14) A thief (John 18:40) Barabbas is clearly a guilty man deserving of death!

"His blood shall be on us and on our children!" (Matt. 27:25) A criminal was released instead of an innocent man! Jesus took Barabbas’ place on the cross

His name… – What is it? Bar-abbas Son of Father You are Barabbas!

He is a notorious prisoner (Mat 27:16) An insurrectionist (rebel) (Mark 15:7) A murderer (Mark 15:7, Acts 3:14) A thief (John 18:40) Barabbas is clearly a guilty man deserving of death! You are a notorious prisoner (slave of sin, John 8:34) You are an insurrectionist (rebel) You are a murderer (hatred, 1 John 3:15) You are a thief You are clearly a guilty person deserving of death!

Jesus took YOUR place on the cross You can be released from your sin! How can we receive freedom? “he who has died is freed from sin.” Romans 6:7

New Testament terminology identifying the point when one is forgiven: He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross so that we might die to sin 1 Peter 2:24 “…If we died with Him we shall also live with Him” - 2 Timothy 2:11 “Now if we died with Christ we believe we will also live with Him. - Romans 6:8 “…for you died and your life is hidden with Christ in God.” Colossians 3:3 “I have been crucified with Christ…” Gal. 2:20

Our sins can not and will not be forgiven UNLESS: We have died to sin We have died with Christ We have been united with Christ in His death We have been crucified with Christ We have been freed from sin

“What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? 2 May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it?” v1-2 “They died to sin.” …. How?/When? ROMANS 6 died to sin

“Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus baptized into His death baptized into Christ Jesus have been v3 baptized into His death

4 Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.” (6:4) Buried WITH Him into death buried with Him through baptism into death Raised into New Life newness of life

United with Him in His Death “For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection” (6:5) and His Resurrection united with Him if

“knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with,” (6:6) crucified with Him body of sin might be done away with Sin taken away!

“so that we would no longer be slaves to sin, for he who has died is freed from sin.” (6:6-7) Freed from sin freed from sin

Have you been freed from your sin? “why do you delay? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His name.” -Acts 22:16
