www.ofi.at 13 USA 04.January 2011-FDA Food Safety Modernization Act It aims to ensure the U.S. food supply is safe by shifting the focus from responding to contamination to preventing it. Title I – Improving Capacity to prevent Food Safety Problems Title II - Improving Capacity to Detect and Respond to Food Safety Problems Title III - Improving the safety of imported food Title IV – Miscellaneous provisions 30. March 2012 the FDA denied a request to prohibit the use of BPA in human food and packaging http://www.fda.gov

www.ofi.at 16 Australia / New Zealand – Handling with BPA  Different studies have raised potential concerns that BPA exposure may cause multiple health problems. However the overwhelming weight of scientific opinion is that there is no health or safety issue at the levels people are exposed to.  The Australian Government has introduced a voluntary phase out of BPA use in polycarbonate baby bottles. www.foodstandards.gov.au

www.ofi.at 22 WPO

www.ofi.at 23 WPO – implementation of a working group?  Based on new highly sensitive analysis methods and research findings, the legislatur has a certain dynamic.  The example Bisphenol A shows the fast-changing and often contradictory legislation of various countries  Building a WPO working group for rapide communication and reaction on legislation changings

www.ofi.at 24 Possible tasks / targets  Network / Contact persons  Overview of existing regulatory  Foresight of regulatory trends  Discussion / Exchange of views  Contact to IAPRI  Information on current claims
