3. Bullying Definition  Bullying is when someone repeatedly and on purpose says or does mean or hurtful things to another person who has a hard time defending himself or herself.

4. What is the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program?  Research-based program  Designed for all students  Focused on changing norms and restructuring the school setting  Preventive and responsive  NOT time limited: requires systematic efforts over time

5. Goals of OBPP  To reduce existing bullying problems among students  To prevent the development of new bullying problems  To achieve better peer relations at school

6. Main components and core principles  Components include: School level, Classroom level, Individual level & Community level  Core principles are:  Warmth, positive interest and involvement by adults  Firm limits to unacceptable behavior  Consistent use of nonphysical, non-hostile negative consequences when rules are broken  Adults who function as authorities and positive role models

7. 4 Anti-Bullying Rules  1. We will not bully others.  2. We will try to help students who are bullied.  3. We will try to include students who are left out.  4. If we know that somebody is being bullied, we will tell an adult at school and an adult at home.

8. Possible Positive Consequences  Verbal encouragement, smiles, positive notes home  Fun activities or privileges  Healthy treats  Point systems

9. Possible Negative Consequences  Verbal reprimands  Time outs  Replacement of damaged property  A discussion about what has happened and what is expected in the future  Close proximity to adults  Parent contact  Principal and/or parent meetings  Suspension from school

11. Parent Contact  Notes or phone calls  Parents play an important role in partnering with the school to address bullying behavior with their children.  Resources are available (Hand out parent pamphlet.)

12. Hot spots as determined by Olweus survey  Cafeteria  Bus  Playground  Procedures to address hot spots:  Staff training  Increased supervision  Review of 2014-2015 data

13. Classroom Meetings  Held weekly in classrooms  K-2 for at least 15 minutes  Gr. 3-5 for at least 30 minutes  Build community  Teach expectations  Classroom charts  Bulletin boards

14. Parent questions or concerns  Bullying is best when discussed in private, not in group settings.  Parents are encouraged to contact their child’s teacher with questions or concerns.
