Great leaders = Great schools NEW LEADERS INFORMATION SESSION 2011-2012 Recruitment and Admissions Season
2
2011 © New Leaders | 2 Vision & Mission Vision We envision a day when there is educational excellence and equity across America - when our country’s public schools ensure that every student is prepared for success in college, careers and citizenship. Mission Our mission is to ensure high academic achievement for all children, especially students in poverty and students of color, by developing transformational school leaders and advancing the policies and practices that allow great leaders to succeed.
3
2011 © New Leaders | 3 What we know There is a pressing need for great leadership within our nation’s underperforming schools. By 4th grade, African-American and Latino students are, on average, nearly three academic years behind their white peers. 5-year-olds from low-income communities have one-fourth the vocabulary of their mid-income peers. Nearly 50% of all public school students of color do not graduate from high school. Roughly one in 10 young male high school dropouts is in jail or juvenile detention. Roughly one in 35 young male high school graduates is in jail or juvenile detention.
4
2011 © New Leaders | 4 What we believe New Leaders holds five core beliefs and values Every student can achieve academically at high levels. All adults must take personal responsibility for student learning and achievement. Great schools are led by great principals. With access to outstanding public education, all students can unlock their fullest potential in the classroom and in life. Delivering high-quality public education to all students is critical to a just society. "What I'm most proud of… …is being part of a school in which 100% of our students were accepted to four-year colleges.” Paul Bambrick-Santoyo New Leaders Principal North Star Academies Network
5
2011 © New Leaders | 5 What concerns us Across the country, a small number of classrooms and schools are demonstrating high academic achievement for every student. Our society’s greatest challenge is that this kind of success is not being accomplished at scale, especially in high need schools. Drawing upon the strength of our mission, the drive, energy, and expertise of our national staff and school leaders, and the momentum we have gained since our inception, New Leaders is well-positioned to address this challenge. Many of our nation’s schools fail to provide every student with great leadership.
6
2011 © New Leaders | 6 Where we work New Leaders’ work across a range of environments gives us a unique vantage point on school leadership and education reform. In 2001, we trained and supported 13 aspiring principals in Chicago and New York City. We have grown to build a national community of about 800 outstanding New Leaders in 12 urban areas who serve nearly 250,000 students in a range of school contexts: – District & Charter – Start-Up & Traditional – Elementary, middle, and high schools Bay Area New Orleans & Jefferson Parish Memphis Charlotte Milwaukee Chicago New York Newark Washington, DC Baltimore & Prince George’s County Making a difference coast to coast
7
2011 © New Leaders | 7 Who we are Our competency-based selection process ensures that New Leaders come from a wide range of pathways and experiences. One-third of New Leaders are men, and two-thirds are women. New Leaders range in age from 25 to 60. About 60% are people of color. New Leaders have experience in district, alternative and charter schools, universities, companies, non-profit organizations and foundations. Our community is very diverse…

2011 © New Leaders | 9 Our results We are committed to using data to drive organizational learning, assess programmatic impact, and as a source of accountability in working toward our goals and mission. The most improved or highest performing schools in five cities - and in two cases, states - have been led by New Leaders. Students in K-8 schools led by New Leaders for at least three years are making achievement gains faster than comparable students in their districts by significant margins. In 2010, 23% of 2+ New Leaders led schools made dramatic gains in math and ELA combined. This compares to 12% of district schools. In 2010, the average four year graduation rate in New Leaders-led high schools was 71%. This compares to 63% in district schools.

Residents attend sessions with faculty from 8AM until approximately 4PM. Sessions may include discussions, small group work, lectures and presentations. On some afternoons, Residents participate in case-study groups, peer-led presentations, optional discussion sessions, and/or book talks. Evenings may be devoted to reading, assignments, special presenters and/or preparation for class. Some afternoons, evenings, and weekends are free of any scheduled activities so Residents can take breaks and leverage opportunities to connect with one another. Summer Foundations runs from late June through late July. For the last five Cohorts, it has been held on the campus of Boston University, but the location for 2012 has not yet been determined. What does a typical day at Summer Foundations look like?

2011 © New Leaders | 26 Common Questions (3 of 3) Upon completion of the Residency year and city-specific requirements, most New Leaders receive formal certification and licensure as administrators in their respective states. Each program site either has a university partner that recognizes the New Leaders coursework that leads to administrative certification, or has been formally approved by the city and state as a certifying program. In all cases, we have mapped our curriculum to state standards and as long as you successfully complete the requirements of the New Leaders Residency, coursework, and weekly seminars, you will receive certification. Some program sites require that you pass additional state and/or district assessments during or at the end of your residency to obtain certification. Team members at our local program offices are available to provide more detailed information. Will I have my administrative certification after my Residency?
