Theory of Knowledge asks students to explore the question “How do you know that you know _______?” Four “Ways of Knowing” are used to explore distinct “Areas of Knowledge” Language is one of these Ways of Knowing used as a tool for discovery

What is language? What qualifies as language and what does not? Why is it important for us to be clear about the meanings of words? Does language determine thought and our experience of reality? In what ways is the slogan “language is power” true? In what ways does language create or reinforce power?

What is “light” in its scientific (i.e. Physics) definition? What are your associations with “Sunlight”? Now read the poem on p.40 in the packet. Does sunlight factually “harden and grow cold”? Why or why not?

Look at the list of roles on p.42 in your packet What would you add as uses of language based on your area of expertise? What do you observe in your students?

Read each pair of texts on p.44 Do you perceive these experiences differently? Why or why not?

Use some of these ideas to spark thinking about HOW we use and develop language to guide students learning in various subject areas.
