2. Change of name After discussions on architecture and the relationship between A2/A3/A4, title of WP-A3 changed to some combination of –“Hardware, Networking and User Interface” (Was previously “Storage/Compute Technology”)

3. Change of Scope Networking always was part of plans, so change to name just makes this clear “User Interface” is new. WPM now responsible for ensuring adequate UIs and visualization exist for Phase A –Sometimes, e.g. WP-A5.5 (STP), UI is already part of Astrogrid plans –Where it is not, UIs will be made available using resources from outside Astrogrid, e.g. Starlink –Little or no change in resource requirements for A3

4. Outstanding issue Recruitment of PP2 is still the top priority for WP-A3 (was top priority at the time of the September Astrogrid meeting) PP2 is the only full-timer working on WP- A3, so WP-A3 relies on him/her to do most of the work. ETA of PP2: February just possible, but more likely March 2002.

5. Hardware Hardware purchases cut back in light of tight funding Beowulf clusters at Edinburgh and Jodrell will be used for trials

6. Tasks/Deliverables for Next Quarter Include: Report on the Networking available to AG over the next 5 yrs, including QoS options Discussions with GridPP re PC “clusters” compared with PC “farms” Meeting with AVO WP3.2 Manager to align AVO and AG WPs, as far as possible Clarify with PS (NW) initial science demonstrators (including Solar and STP) and hence clarify UI and visualisation requirements for Phase A.
