2 The Subjunctive to Express Feelings and Emotions The subjunctive is used in noun clauses after verbs that express emotions such as hope, fear, surprise, regret, pity, anger, joy, and sorrow. Following are some sample verbs and expressions. alegrarse (de) enojar esperar estar contento/a (de) lamentar molestar to be glad to anger; to make angry to hope to be happy to regret to bother sentir (ie, i) sorprender(se) temer tener (ie) miedo (de) to regret to surprise; to be surprised to fear to be afraid

3 The Subjunctive to express feelings and emotions Many impersonal expressions also show feelings and emotion and call for the subjunctive when there is a change in subject. Some common impersonal expressions are shown in the next slide: es bueno/malo/mejorit’s good/bad/better es extrañoit’s strange es lamentableit’s regrettable es una lástimait’s a shame es ilógicoit’s illogical es lógicoit’s logical es ridículoit’s ridiculous es sorprendenteit’s surprising

Juana teme que su madre padezca de diabetes. Juana fears that her mother will suffer from diabetes. The Subjunctive to Express Feelings and Emotions The subjunctive is used in noun clauses after verbs that express emotions such as hope, fear, surprise, regret, pity, anger, joy, and sorrow.

5 Just as with verbs of volition, when there is no change of subject for the two verbs, we use the infinitive instead of a noun clause. Carlos lamenta estar enfermo. Carlos regrets being sick. Esperamos hacer más ejercicio esta semana. We hope to exercise more this week. The Subjunctive to Express Feelings and Emotions Juana teme padecer de diabetes. Juana fears that she suffers from diabetes.

6 The expression ¡Ojalá! entered the Spanish language during the Arab (Moorish) occupation of Spain. It comes from an Arabic expression meaning God (Allah) willing or May God grant. ¡Ojalá! may be used with or without que and is always followed by the subjunctive. ¡Ojalá (que) nos mantengamos en forma!
