Why is this topic important? Goals need to be considered before preparing a lesson Goals NEED to be appropriate for the students YOU are teaching Goals are the desired learning outcome objectives that will be observed Goals need to be clear

Identifies/selects goals that indicate a correct understanding of subject matter What students are to learn has probably been prescribed….STANDARDS were determined beforehand…. Standards refer to a level of knowledge of skill that is generally acknowledged as necessary to perform a specific task or to occupy a certain role in our society. Standards exist on the national and state level Most states have standards The US emphasizes SBE (Standards-based Education) basing curriculum, teaching, and assessment of student on rigorous, so called world class standards. Ex: Students understand and apply geometry to solve nonmathematical situations.

Standards Continued There are CONTENT and PERFORMANCE standards Content standard: Knowledge and skill Performance standard: to which degree Standards and broken down into benchmarks and indicators Why develop standards? A variety of individuals Teachers use curriculum guides, models, or frameworks, for different subjects and align them with national and state standards. We update our courses of study every five years, the standards hold us responsible.

More Standards There are standards relating to students’ performance of standardized tests of achievement and there are standards for student performance and behavior at the classroom level Other terms for STANDARD include content standard, goals, expectations, learning results, or learning outcomes. All state Standards are found on the Ohio Department of Education Website (www.ode.state.oh.us)www.ode.state.oh.us Standards should NOT deprive you of creativity Standards are like having a map with you when you travel Always add your own ideas

Goals for ALL students Can be described through a lesson plan Check out lesson plan from the state of Ohio Check out lesson plan books Be sure lesson plan is grade appropriate Goals in a lesson plan include acquired concepts, facts, values, thinking skills, social skills, performance skills, and behavioral skills. Websites: www.teachernet.com www.lessonplans.comwww.teachers.net www.lessonplans.comwww.teachers.net

You may have a diverse population Teachers need to be aware of students’ actions, attitudes, knowledge and skills Learning goals may need to be modified IEP- Individualized Education Plan You may have to adjust original lesson plans….it happens all the time.
