2 AS Module 1 – The Modern Novel This module provides an introduction to the detailed study of one modern novel. Students will study Michael Frayn’s Spies. 3 AS Module 2 - Shakespeare The detailed study of a Shakespeare play in this module enables candidates to satisfy the requirement of the Subject Criteria. Students will study Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Assessment will take place in a one hour open book examination. 4 AS Module 3 – Texts in Contexts This module introduces candidates to the study of two texts (one pre- twentieth century) with an emphasis on the context of the writer and the reader and of how interpretation of text changes through time and according to circumstance. Students will study both Thomas Hardy’s Selected Poems and Oscar Wilde’s A Woman of No Importance. Students are examined in this unit via two hour open book examination. 6 A2 Module 5 – Literary Connections In this module candidates will undertake the detailed study of two substantial texts. Candidates will be invited to explore the ways in which texts relate to each other. Students will compare the ways in which strife affects the mind in both Ian McEwan’s Saturday and Virginia Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway. 7 A2 Module 6 – Reading for Meaning This module is a synoptic module. It requires close detailed study of unseen texts from a range on periods and genres. The theme for the reading of this unit is War in Literature, with specific reference to literature written about and during The First World War.
