$200 $300 $400 Final Jeopardy $100 $200 $300 $400 $500 $100 $200 $300 $400 $500 $100 $200 $300 $400 $500 $100 $200 $300 $400 $500 $100 Science concepts Fossils and Modern Animals Fossils and Modern Plants Vocabulary Fossils
3
The study of fossils is called? C1 $100
4
Paleontology C1? $100
5
The hollow space left after an organisms remains dissolve. C1 $200
6
Mold C1 $200
7
A type of fossil formed when minerals fill the space left after an organisms remains' dissolve. C1 $300
8
Cast C1 $300
9
A fossil that helps scientists find the age of a rock layer that may be out of order? C1 $400
10
Index Fossil C1 $400
11
Timer The final Jeopardy answer is: C1 final Organisms evolve to survive their environments. When the environment changes, organisms that evolve quickly are the ones the survive. Organisms that do not evolve quickly do not survive. The fossil records show that sharks first appeared more than 400 million years ago. Dinosaurs appeared about 250 million years ago and became extinct about 65 million years ago. What is one possible reason why sharks have not become extinct?
12
C1 final Sharks live in the ocean. It is possible that the ocean environment has not changed much since 400 million years ago, or at least not so much that sharks could not evolve to keep living there. Dinosaurs lived on land, Their environment must have changed so quickly that they could not evolve to match it, and they became extinct.
13
C2 $100 Why might a very old or rare fossil not be a good index fossil?
14
C2 $100 They may only appear in one location.
15
C2 $200 Why is a very common fossil bad to use as an index fossil?
16
C2 $200 They are common and may appear in many different layers of many different ages.
17
C2 $300 In which type of rock are most fossils found?
18
C2 $300 Sedimentary
19
C2 $400 If a bird leaves a footprint in the mud, and then the mud hardens into stone. What of fossil is this?
20
C2 $400 Trace fossil
21
C2 $500 A paleontologist finds a fossil of an unknown insect. How can they classify the fossil, and what will he compare it to?
22
C2 $500 He will compare the fossil insect with insects that are alive today. The insect will be classified with the modern insect that it most resembles.
23
C3 $100 Which layer of rock is the oldest? The top, middle, or bottom
24
C3 $100 bottom
25
C3 $200 True or False? Some kinds of living things have not changed in millions of years.
26
C3 $200 True
27
C3 $300 A shark has a skeleton made up of a soft, firm material that is also found in human ears. Which part of the shark is likely to become a fossil?
28
C3 $300 teeth
29
C3 $400 Describe what a mold fossil looks like.
30
C3 $400 A mold fossil shows the hollow space that is left behind one all the organism has dissolved. (Like our leaf impressions in clay)
31
C3 $500 A rock layer is 25 million years old. What can you infer about the age of the rock layer below it if the rocks have not moved? Explain.
32
C3 $500 You can infer that the layer below is older than 25 million years. Scientists have found out that if rock layers have not moved, then the ones farther down are older.
33
C4 $100 If something lived in many places for a short time, its fossil makes a good?
34
C4 $100 Index fossil
35
C4 $200 Which fossil method can preserve a whole animal?
36
C4 $200 Trapping in amber
37
C4 $300 What was Pangea?
38
C4 $300 An ancient giant continent.
39
C4 $400 What do mammoths and elephants have in common?
40
C4 $400 An ancestor with no tusks.
41
C4 $500 What makes a fossil a good index fossil?
42
C4 $500 It appears in many places. It appears in the same layer in all locations.
43
C5 $100 What is formed when dissolved minerals fill a mold fossil?
44
C5 $100 Cast
45
C5 $200 Where does amber come from?
46
C5 $200 TREES
47
C5 $300 When the young Mammoth was found in Siberia, what preserved it?
48
C5 $300 ICE
49
C5 $400 If you were a scientist who found a clamshell in the rock layers of a desert. What could you infer about the area’s environment in the past?
50
C5 $400 When the clam lived there the environment was wet. Could have been a sea.
51
C5 $500 Why do scientists sometimes have trouble knowing the age of sedimentary rock layers?
52
C5 $500 Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions disturb the layers, and wind and water wear away some layers and deposit new ones.
