Thyroxine is a hormone secreted by the thyroid gland

Structure of Thyroxine Thyroxine referred to as T4, because of the four iodine atoms on the molecule. Thyroxine (3,5,3',5'-tetraiodothyronine) Single-stranded DNA-binding protein The amino acid sequence of the peptide is Gln-Val-Asp-Ala- Gln-Pro-Leu-Arg-Pro-Cys-Glu-Leu-Gln-Arg-COOH

Where Does Thyroxine Come From Thyroxine is the primary hormone produced by the thyroid gland. Thyroid hormone has an effect on nearly all tissues of the body where it increases cellular activity. The function of the thyroid is to regulate the body's metabolism (conversion of oxygen and calories to energy).

What Does Thyroxine Do Thyroxine is the body's main metabolic hormone, and influences physical development Functions Liver: – increases release of cholesterol. Digestive system: – secretion of digestive juices – promotes smooth muscle contractions for motility. Skeletal and cardiac muscles: – promotes normal development, tone and function. Nervous system, – promotes normal development of the system during youth, – maintains it's functions during adulthood Reproductive system – promotes the ability for conception, – Secretion of milk by the breasts. Skin: – T4 promotes hydration, secretions of exocrine glands, and the growth of hair.

Importance of Thyroxine In healthy people, the thyroid makes just the right amounts of hormones, which have important actions throughout the body. The thyroid "runs" our metabolism. – Effects how many calories we burn, how warm we feel, and how much we weigh.

More About Thyroxine Every cell in the body depends upon thyroid hormones for regulation of their metabolism. Thyroxine was synthesized in 1927 by British chemists Charles Robert Harington and George Barger. Thyroxine is used clinically in the treatment of thyroid gland deficiency diseases in adults and in the treatment of cretinism in children.

Why Did I Pick Thyroxine This protein was one of the few I knew about on the list. I have learned about the thyroid throughout school, and understood that thyroxine was a product of the thyroid. I wanted to learn the process and function of thyroxine more in depth. This allowed me to understand what we were learning about in class and apply it to a real process that is very relatable.
