The Original IES Classification System
The original classifications included full cutoff, cutoff, semi-cutoff and non-cutoff. These were designed solely around street lighting applications. These designations were not accurate enough to meet the needs of projects in relation to light trespass, glare and night glow concerns. Highlights: Tell them what you have told them. 2 2

B.U.G. Ratings – Improved Evaluation Criteria
The BUG system was developed by the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) to make comparing and evaluating outdoor luminaires fast, easy and more complete than older systems. Work on the BUG system started in 2005 when the IES upgraded the original roadway shielding classification system. Highlights: Tell them what you have told them. 3 3

ActiveLED Update The BUG acronym describes light escaping from an outdoor lighting luminaire in sectors. “B” stands for backlight, or the light directed in back of a mounting pole. “U” stands stands for uplight, or the light directed above the horizontal plane of the luminaire “G” stands for glare, or the amount of light emitted from the luminaire at angles known to cause glare Highlights: Tell them what you have told them. 4 4

Benefits of using the B.U.G. Rating System
Allows a specifying engineer to quickly determine the suitability of a light in respect of light trespass, glare or dark sky (up-shine) characteristics. BUG ratings provide backlight output, glare information and indicates how well the luminaire controls uplight. Presents an accurate picture of lumen distribution and overall efficiency of the luminaire Highlights: Tell them what you have told them. 6 6
