The CO 2 Offset Trust The CO 2 Offset Trust is an International Rotary Club-to-Club Project administrated by the UK Rotary clubs of Sheffield in D1270, Dronfield, Drone Valley and Bretby in D1220: the USA Clubs of East Hampton in D7260 and Tempe South in D5510: the Australian Clubs of Margaret River in D9460 and Naracoorte in D9780 and the South African Club of Kirstenbosch in D9350., Canadian Club of Nanaimo North in D5020 ‘Rotarians for CO 2 Reduction’

I would like to talk to you about: Global Warming The cause & the consensus view The damaging impact of Climate Change The CO 2 Offset Trust and what it does YOU What YOU can do to help....... The CO 2 Offset Trust
3
Is the Climate Changing ? Are Glacier Parks Melting? Are there more Tornadoes? Is there more Flooding? Are there more Hurricanes? Are the Polar Icecaps Melting? Is it getting hotter?
4
Let's not confuse 'Climate' with 'Weather' If the weather changes, it's inconvenient If the Climate changes, it threatens the human race

The air we breathe is just 10–15 km high Equal to a coat of varnish on a soccer ball...! (0.001 of earth’s diameter) The Science
10
The Correlation Between CO 2 and Temperature 900ppm 450ppm The Science Carbon emissions are the biggest cause of global warming If we do nothing this will happen
11
The International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 600 independent scientists from 40 countries appointed by the World Meteorological Society Who can tell us if Global Warming is caused by Human Activity?
12
IPCC Observations: “There is new evidence that most of the warming over the past 50 years is attributable to human activities..... “Human influences will continue to change atmospheric composition throughout the 21 st century... “Global average temperature and sea level are projected to rise under all IPCC scenarios” Source = IPCC Fourth Assessment Report: Climate Change 2007
13
Then you could see the pollution.........Now you can't
14
And the problem is made worse by Population Growth ROTARY can do little to affect Population Growth in the short term........ But.... another Rotary Project - ' Literacy' - particularly for women - isthe most effective long-term contraceptive of all is the most effective long-term contraceptive of all

To insert the ABC clip here, click on link below, then on the centre icon '2015 Trailer' ABC News is seeking to answer what it describes as 'perhaps the most important question of our time' — What could our world look like over the next one hundred years if we don’t act now to save our troubled planet? http://earth2100.tv/ ABC TV – 'Is this Earth 2015...?'
16
Whether we are convinced by the reasons given for Climate Change: Something serious is happening The problems will affect us all We cannot wait and hope.... We should all do something.........even if only to save rising energy costs
17
Sea levels rise by up to 17“ Global temperature rise by up to 7°F Florida’s coastline will drastically change and Bangladesh could disappear! What kind of Refugee and Political pressures will this bring? The IPCC Predicts

Consider : The main rivers in China, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and other surrounding countries are fed by the glaciers in the Himalayas. Rivers like the Yang & Ganges. Over 2 billion people Over 2 billion people rely on these sources for drinking, washing, fishing, food production, electricity and industry! Imagine the effects of a severe reduction of available water to that number of people...
22
Refugee Pressures due to Global Warming: ‘If we do not prevent the excesses of climate change, we will be bequeathing to our children a world of severe insecurity, if not chaos, and it will be our generation that will be blamed”. Quote supplied to the Trust by Professor Paul Rogers, who leads the course for Rotary Peace Scholars at Bradford University, England.
23
Finally For those who need real proof of global warming!
24
Are You wondering what you can do that will be effective! Reduce your Energy Consumption
25
Are You wondering what you can do that will be effective! Reduce Your Flights
26
Are You wondering what you can do that will be effective! Consolidate your journeys: Consider alternatives: Drive more economically:
27
Once you have done your best to reduce energy use: Make a personal credit card donation to The CO 2 Offset Trust to offset your unavoidable CO 2 (e.g. a flight) The donation goes to a Rotary Club project that removes CO 2 from the atmosphere to compensate for your activity The donation can be calculated from the ‘Activity Charts’ on our Website www.CO 2 Offset Trust.org

What is The CO 2 Offset Trust ? The CO 2 Offset Trust – a registered charity – is an International Rotary Club-to-Club Project The Trust aims to be a FORUM to develop, share and promote ideas. The Trust aims to be a FORUM to develop, share and promote ideas. Rotary Clubs can use these to create Rotary Clubs can use these to create SUSTAINABILITY projects. SUSTAINABILITY projects. Remove CO 2 from the atmosphere. Promote ideas for CO 2 reduction. Educate people in ways to reduce CO 2 emissions at local level. The Trust will also Donate funds to Foundation 3H Projects that reduce CO 2 emissions The Trust uses its donated funds to Sponsor Rotary projects that

Standby-Saver – A project promoted by Sheffield Club and available at discount from D.1270
34
Standby-Saver (D. 1270) – Standby Saver cuts 100% appliance standby power – Saves from 6 to 26% average monthly electricity bill – The unit consumes less than 1 Watt – It meets the requirements for power usage of the UK Energy Saving Trust approval scheme. – Standby Saver is a 6-way electrical extension with two ‘switchable’ sockets which allow DVD and video appliances on timers, to be left switched on when required
35
Your Club could introduce one of these projects – or devise your own Eliminate plastic shopping bags, encourage walking cycling & public transport, improve home insulation, switch to CFL light-bulbs, monitor energy use, create a local energy forum, buy from renewable sources, maintain tyre pressures, buy Energy Star appliances, help local people reduce their energy costs, spread the word, encourage schools to get involved, etc... www.CO 2 OffsetTrust.org designed by Rotarians, for Rotaria ns – it’s the perfect place to start making a difference Download more ideas from our website.......
