The Importance of Combustion Testing Testo HVAC Distributor Training:

Page 2Testo USA,Presentation Title (version), Author, Date, Confidentiality Agenda Why Test? What to Test? Why Testo?

Page 3Testo USA,Presentation Title (version), Author, Date, Confidentiality Why Test? Safety / Liability Efficiency Appliance Operation / Longevity Revenue / Cost Savings / Professionalism

Page 4Testo USA,Presentation Title (version), Author, Date, Confidentiality Why Combustion Test: Safety Carbon Monoxide (CO) can be lethal Over 500 deaths / year; 15,000 ER visits/ year CO originates from incomplete combustion Reasons for the formation: Fuel rich mixture Improper venting Cooling of the flame temperture

Page 5Testo USA,Presentation Title (version), Author, Date, Confidentiality Carbon Monoxide Facts Odorless Colorless Tasteless Mixes well in air Poisonous

Page 6Testo USA,Presentation Title (version), Author, Date, Confidentiality Why Test: Efficiency Combustion Efficiency = Fuel Savings 1% increase in efficiency nets 1% fuel savings Ensures the equipment is operating at optimal efficiency Saves on both fuel and electricity usage Customer expects the system to operate at stated efficiency There is a difference between combustion efficiency and AFUE Customer receives what they expect Performance Verification

Page 7Testo USA,Presentation Title (version), Author, Date, Confidentiality Why Test: Operation and Longevity Heat Exchangers Cracked HX investigation via O2 - Monitor for changes in O2 when blower starts and stops - Monitor O2 during ventilation air test as outlined in the Intl. Fuel Gas Code, Appendix D Nether should affect furnace operation or the O2 reading!

Page 8Testo USA,Presentation Title (version), Author, Date, Confidentiality CO and Efficiency Tests can be billable services Reduce Call Backs from improper installs or trouble- shooting Prevent unnecessary warranty disputes Professionalism of having the right tools for the job Professionalism of being a solutions provider You are providing safety, comfort, and savings Without measurements you’re just guessing! Differentiate the company and yourself Offer something your competition doesn’t offer or Offer it in a superior format Why Test: Revenue, Cost Reduction, & Professionalism

Page 9Testo USA,Presentation Title (version), Author, Date, Confidentiality What to test… Oxygen (%O 2 ): primarily determines complete combustion Carbon Dioxide (%CO 2 ): the maximized value relative to efficiency and “ideal combustion”, but does not necessarily indicate complete combustion. Carbon Monoxide (CO): lethal gas formed from incomplete combustion Excess Air: Needed to show complete combustion, but high values indicate high heat stack loss – poor efficiency. Efficiency: represents the total amount of heat available from the fuel minus the losses from the gasses going up the stack Temperature (ambient and stack): Needed to determine efficiency Draft pressure: Confirms the proper venting of combustibles out of the flue, an appliance has 5 minutes to prove draft under ANSI standards Pressure: Confirmation or setting of gas pressures
