Talking about nationality Unlike in English, German adjectives of nationality are never capitalized and are rarely used to refer to people. To describe a person’s nationality, use sein with a noun of nationality, dropping the article before the noun. Magst du deutsches Essen? Do you like German food? Sarah ist Deutsche. Sarah is German.

Talking about nationality ACHTUNG The United States may be refered to as Amerika, die USA (pl.), or die Vereinigten Staaten (pl.). To talk about travelling to a country, use the preposition in with country names that begin with an article and nach with those that do not. Ich fliege morgen nach Deutschland. Ich fahre dann in die Schweiz. — Schweizer is used as an adjective in certain fixed expressions, such as Schweizer Käse and Schweizer Schokolade. It ends in -er regardless of the gender or number of the noun that follows it.

Marie ist Französin. Marie is French. Yasmin ist keine Türkin. Yasmin isn’t Turkish. Max ist nicht Kanadier. Max isn’t Canadian.

Talking about nationality Most nouns referring to languages are identical to the corresponding adjective of nationality, but are capitalized and have no added endings. Nouns referring to a language are always neuter. They do not take definite articles. Ben spricht fließend Deutsch. Ben speaks German fluently. Wir sprechen kein Italienisch. We don’t speak Italian. IIhr Französisch ist sehr gut. Your French is very good. Ich spreche nicht so gut Russisch. I don’t speak Russian very well.
