Here you see a selection of key business needs and IT plans that EMC believes are at the forefront of today’s information challenges. Revenue Business-critical information must be captured and available when needed—at all times Agility New or changed business initiatives must be up and running quickly Costs Information growth of more than 50% per year puts pressure on budgets Productivity Must deliver a higher return on investment–both for human recourses and capital equipment High availability Protect data and design data center for highest system and information availability Rapid provisioning Have needed reserves of both storage capacity and performance Maximize budgets Automatically ensure that no stale data occupies expensive capacity New strategies Stop firefighting and increase the capacity managed by each staff member with new tools

5 Drivers of Next-Generation Storage Strategy
HDD New Storage Technology Flash Next-Generation Storage Strategy Consolidation and Virtualization Practices like server virtualization combined with advances in Moore’s Law and server consolidation increases the need for storage performance Simultaneously, relentless 62% yearly data growth demands more cost-efficient storage Finally, new technologies like enterprise Flash and high-capacity drives holds the promise for more efficient storage strategies that can change IT economics The drivers of a next-generation storage strategy are: IT strategy must be in sync with your business strategy and business objectives. As new technology (multi-processor/multi-core servers) and newer practices (server virtualization and consolidation) become the norm, storage strategies must change to take full advantage of these inflexion points. Storage performance and capacity now must be managed in unison. This is specially true for SAN storage where large capacities are centrally managed and many virtualized serves needs to have their needed I/O demands met. Failure to do both may put your business at risk. Finally, new technology, like high-performance Flash drives and high-capacity 2 TB disk drives, provides new opportunities to look older storage strategies with a fresh look. How can the business benefit from these new inflexion points?

6 Next-Generation Storage Strategy
Must be both simple and efficient Simple Efficient Note to Presenter: This is an optional slide to start the discussion. Use this slide to get a better understanding of the strategies that are most appealing to your customer. As discussed earlier, there are many information challenges impacting business today. But on closer inspection, it all comes down to the need to drive down your costs, make you more competitive, and reduce your risks. In other words, it’s about saving money, providing your business with the competitive advantage that allows you to increase your revenue, and at the same time reducing exposure to risk. EMC believes that EMC Celerra can help address these needs by making your storage strategy simpler and more efficient. EMC Celerra now brings you the simplicity to easily manage all of your Celerra and CLARiiON arrays through one seamless experience that services any application—be it virtual or physical—and connects with all protocols, including NAS (NFS, including pNFS, and CIFS), iSCSI, Fiber Channel, and Celerra Multi-Path File System (MPFS). Celerra automatically balances performance and capacity, optimizing your investment and addressing your data’s dynamic needs. You can now get more out of your existing arrays with fewer resources, less time, and less money. Let’s look at some of the new features available to Celerra customers. 10 Celerra Innovation Maximize real estate with ultra-dense storage racks
New feature Doubles drive density: From five drives per rack unit to 10 drives per rack unit Celerra NS-480 and NS-960 42U rack sports Tandem rails and dual drive array enclosures Fully configured racks to simplify field upgrades and minimize serviceability Drive support: 10K/15K Fibre Channel drives allowed in the vault only (enclosure 0-0) 5,400 rpm low power SATA or 7,200 rpm SATA throughout 2 TB HDD (hard disk drives) coming soon Flash drives support in any FC slot Note to Presenter: This is an optional slide, especially appropriate for customers with floor space at a premium. EMC’s high-density configuration options for the Celerra NS-480 and NS-960 deliver twice the capacity in half the floor space to optimize resources in physical data centers. Rather than just 15 drives in one disk array enclosure (DAE) per 3Us, in addition, the Celerra high-density configuration options now have two DAEs per 3Us (one DAE in front of another with the traditional front-to-back cooling), resulting in a total of 30 drives per 3U. The rack itself is slightly higher than a traditional 40U rack in that it is 42Us. It is also deeper to allow two DAEs (one in front of the other). The DAEs use a tandem rail system that extends when opened, allowing full frontal access to the DAE in the back. The high-density configuration options support full Celerra functionality with the one difference being that Fibre Channel drives are only allowed in the vault enclosure.

14 Celerra Innovation FAST optimizes for economic efficiency as data ages
Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 Year 4 Year 5 As data ages and becomes less frequently accessed, FAST automatically moves it to high capacity HDDs for lowest cost FAST is optimized for economic efficiency as data ages: Just using Flash drives and high-capacity disk drives in a storage system does not guarantee efficiency. To get maximum efficiency, you need a mechanism that automatically monitors data as it ages. When most data is older than 90 days, the probability of anyone ever requesting that data has fallen to 10 percent. After 180 days, the chance of anyone looking at the data has fallen to 1 percent; and when the data is one year old, only 0.01 percent chance remains that anyone would request the data. Naturally, different datasets may exhibit varying degree of “popularity decay,” but the older the data gets, the less performance the storage system will be required to dedicate to it. As data falls in popularity, it therefore needs to move to less performance-oriented storage at some point. If a gigabyte of data, for example, is moved from an enterprise Flash drive to a SATA drive, the cost of the occupied data storage falls to less than one-one hundredth of the original cost. Conversely, the performance of the SATA drive is similarly one-one hundredth of the I/O performance of the Flash drive. The conclusion is clear: Keep data on Flash as long as it is being requested frequently. Then at some point determine when the data needs to move to more-cost-effective drives and make room for new incoming data with a higher re-access rate. Once this scheme is automated, the system is now optimizing data storage for both best performance and lowest capacity cost. FAST is exactly such a technology. FAST automates data placement for the entire service life of the system. Access Frequency Automatic Flash SATA New and frequently accessed data is stored on Flash for highest performance Days Since Creation

15 Celerra Innovation FAST—Fully Automated Storage Tiering Flash
New feature Optimizes FC or iSCSI storage for: Best performance Largest capacity Lowest cost Dynamically places: “Hot” data is on Flash “Cold” data on SATA drives Maximizes return on investment Ongoing recycling of storage media for highest utilization rate Ensures service level agreements are met Delivers maximum performance over the system’s entire service life Flash Note to Presenter: View in Slide Show mode for animation. EMC has enhanced its FAST technology to now be more automated than ever with Sub-LUN Tiering. This feature works at the storage pool level, below the LUN abstraction. Where earlier versions of FAST operated above the LUN level, FAST now analyzes data patterns at a far more granular level. Instead of moving, say, an entire 800 GB LUN to enterprise Flash drives, FAST now identifies and monitors the entire storage pool in 1 GB chunks. If data becomes active, then FAST automatically moves only these “hot” chunks to a higher tier like Flash. As data cools, FAST also correctly identifies which chunks to migrate to lower tiers and proactively moves them. With such granular tiering, it is now possible to reduce storage acquisition while at the same time improve performance and response time. And because FAST is fully automated and policy driven, there is no manual intervention required to make this happen, so you save on operating costs as well. FAST is ideal if you have a mixed workload of applications and don’t have time or resources to manually analyze and tier each application. Fibre Channel SATA

16 Celerra Innovation Block efficiency at the storage pool level 5% Active Flash New feature 95% Inactive HDD FAST Sub-LUN Tiering automatically moves active data to Flash and inactive data to low-cost SATA Note to Presenter: View in Slide Show mode for animation. As previously described, FAST operates at the Sub-LUN level at a granularity of 1 GB chunks regardless of disks capacity used. FAST constantly monitors how frequently data is accessed and marks data blocks that are accessed frequently (active) for promotion to Flash. Conversely, data that may reside on Flash, but has fallen in access frequency (less active), are marked to vacate this resource. FAST is scheduled to automatically move data between the technology tiers at a planned, off-hour time slot. This way FAST ensures that business-critical data is always served at the highest service level available while at the same time making certain that older, stale data does not clog up costly storage resources. Simple and efficient combination of storage technologies deliver unprecedented performance and the absolute lowest capacity cost, at all times, and for the entire service life of the system. 17 Celerra Innovation FAST Cache for maximum application performance
4.5X better Without FAST Cache HDD DRAM Cache Flash With FAST Cache App server Controller HDD (hard disk drive) performance has not kept up with server demands, leaving applications I/O deficient FAST Cache solves this problem by increasing controller cache by 64 times using Flash drives Most reads and writes are now served directly from high performance Silicon FAST preserves I/O slots for connectivity and is well positioned to take full advantage of any decrease in Flash drive costs FAST Cache’s persistent nature keeps data cached even after a power failure App server Note to Presenter: View in Slide Show mode for animation. While FAST provides automated and efficient tiering over time, FAST Cache leverages enterprise Flash drives to extend existing cache capacities to automatically absorb unpredicted spikes in application workloads, and thereby speeds system and application performance for data that is not already at the Flash tier. Where FAST with Sub-LUN Tiering works at a very granular level of 1 GB chucks, FAST Cache takes this concept one step further by working at the 64K I/O level. By doing so, FAST Cache acts more like dynamic, but persistent, controller cache. By extending controller cache with Flash, the cache-hit ratio is dramatically improved. As a result, the new goal for most application workloads is to strive for a 90 to 95 percent cache hit rate. This is achievable because the size of Flash-based cache is up to 64-times larger than the controller’s original DRAM (dynamic random access memory) cache. Cache hit rates will typically go from one out of five I/Os served from cache to nine out of 10 I/Os served from cache, a 4.5-times improvement. FAST Cache may be added to existing LUN configurations and acts as a system-wide resource. With FAST Cache, you now have multi-terabyte, read-write, non-volatile cache—an absolute first for storage platforms in the midtier market. The fact that data is written to enterprise Flash drives means that when the system returns from a power failure or planned outage, the cache is already warmed up and service levels can readily resume at the point they were before the disruption. The size of FAST Cache is more than ample to catch transitory spikes in I/O demand. Should large amounts of Flash be needed to meet service level agreements, it is important to know that FAST Cache works in unison with FAST Sub-LUN Tiering and that the two technologies complement each other fully. Note to Presenter: EMC’s FAST Cache works for both reads and writes. Competitors, like NetApp, frequently only implement Flash as proprietary read-only schemes. 1 of 5 I/Os from Cache 9 of 10 I/Os from Cache Controller DRAM Cache 4 of 5 I/Os from disk 1 of 10 I/Os from disk HDD

18 Celerra Innovation The FAST Cache effect on applications

Time >1 minute 9 minutes Boot Time New feature Uses system Flash drives Turbo-charges applications with up to 2 TB of FAST Cache for both read and write operations Database Twice the number of users Twice the number of transactions VMware Half the boot time Four-times faster response time Vastly improved end-user experience Scale users faster and further with each system FAST will turbo-charge most applications since frequently accessed data automatically will be moved to cache in 64 KB chunks. EMC is one of the few companies offering both read and write acceleration using Flash drives. Two or more Flash drives may be used to form 2 TB (4 TB raw) of mirrored read and write cache. Both database and VMware datasets benefit from FAST Cache. There is little doubt that FAST Cache will help any blend of applications. The only place where FAST Cache will be of little help is for 100 percent sequential workloads. To accelerate such workloads, add Flash drives to your FAST pools. * Transactions per second

19 Celerra Innovation File-level FAST and data movement
EMC File Management Appliance/VE Move older and/or inactive files automatically off the primary storage system and on to more cost-effective frames Free up primary storage resources automatically Applications still see a virtualized ‘stub’ on the primary storage thereby ensuring that no application interruption occur Celerra EMC Centera EMC Atmos SATA EMC Data Domain Celerra FAST offers file-level tiering inside a single system; but more importantly, Celerra extends this functionality outside the system. Through advanced file-level virtualization, files may be physically mode to lower cost systems while the application being served still sees the path to the file as if it was still on the system. The benefit of this approach is the files can be moved to other systems while applications remain online with no service impact to users. The file movement is completely transparent to users of the system. They still access the file with the exact same path name. Flash Fibre Channel Celerra

20 Logical Application User View
Celerra Innovation Thin LUN Virtual Provisioning Increase storage efficiency Thin LUN Only allocates capacity at point of consumption Safely monitors growth Automates capacity allocation Dramatically improves storage efficiency by frequently doubling utilization rates Thin LUNs fully support Advanced snapshots FAST EMC RecoverPoint Logical Application User View Common Storage Pool User A 10 GB User B User C Physical Allocation 3 GB 4 GB Thin provisioning has become a standard tool as part of a modern IT storage strategy. Just like airlines over book or over subscribe airline seats, it is today necessary for IT to do the same to storage capacity committed to end users. The reason is rooted in how difficult it was in the past for users to ask for and get more storage. They learned the hard way that this was a difficult an painful process, which led them to ask for more storage up-front than they actually needed. As such behavior became common practice, it led to a lot of 2 TB LUNs and file systems stranded with only 30 percent utilization. This problem is fixed with thin virtual LUNs. Now users get an allocation maximum, but the physical storage does not get allocated until it actually is consumed. Thin LUNs drive utilization up dramatically. This feature alone has been responsible for some companies seeing their utilization rate double.

21 Deduplication and compression
Celerra Innovation Maximum efficiency with deduplication and compression Data Deduplication Combine file-level deduplication with block-level compression and reclaim up to 77% space Realized compression ratios depends on file type Double your effective capacity on average ~ 500 GB Deduplication and compression Inactive Active File data 1 TB The terms deduplication and compression are frequently used interchangeably, but in reality they are quite different. They are complementary in that they provide a complete space efficiency strategy. Deduplication typically happens at the file level, which is why networked file systems are a place where this technology is found. In file-level deduplication, multiple instances of the same file are replaced with a single copy of the file and a sequence of pointers that reference the file. The efficiency of this strategy increases as the number of duplicate files being deduplicated increases. If, for instance, the same PowerPoint file is stored 20 times in the same file system, then the potential ratio in data footprint reduction is 20:1 after deduplication. If there are no duplicate files, this strategy is inefficient. On the other hand, compression works at the sub-file level. Here the system looks for sequences of similar blocks and bytes. If a large sequence of, say, zeros is found, this string is replaced with a block counting the number of zeros that is much smaller than the original pattern. Deduplication requires a somewhat lighter CPU load than compression. Together they form a perfect space utilization and space reclamation strategy that will increase storage efficiency significantly in most cases.

23 EMC: The VMware Choice Two out of three CIOs pick EMC for their VMware environments “Which vendor(s) supplied the networked (SAN or NAS) storage used for your virtual server environment?” Trusted storage platform for the most critical and demanding VMware environments Advanced integration and functionality that maximizes the value of a virtualized data center Flexibility to meet infrastructure to business and technical needs Knowledge, experience, and partnerships to make your virtual data center a reality EMC is the storage platform of choice in the virtualized server market. The reason that two out of three CIOs choose EMC for their VMware environments is simple—EMC delivers high-availability platforms that are critical in the virtual server market. High availability, advanced functionality, and excellent service place Celerra ahead of the nearest competitor. EMC Celerra provides the same I/O workload before and after a failure, which is a necessity when you have many virtual applications dependent on this I/O payload. With other vendors, a failure can cause serious degradation, resulting in all virtualized applications degrading concurrently. As shown in the Forrester Research and Goldman Sachs survey results on the slide, EMC is the number one vendor for VMware-attached storage. Note to Presenter: The quote on the slide comes from the Goldman Sachs “IT Spending Survey.” “Which is your storage vendor of choice in a virtual server environment?” “EMC remains the clear storage leader in virtualized environments.”

24 Celerra Consolidation
The perfect storage strategy for VMware Unified Storage for VMware A single unified storage platform gives you the flexibility to grow and evolve your business without added complexity Shared templates iSCSI SAN Fibre Channel NFS/CIFS Block over IP deployment Active Directory, application servers, Exchange 2007 VMware over file deployment Desktop virtual machines Block over Fibre Channel deployment SharePoint, data warehouse, DSS NAS VMware infrastructure requirements are as varied as data center requirements. A single VMware implementation can have requirements for the predictable performance of Fibre Channel while others may need the flexibility of file shares. Celerra unified storage gives you the flexibility to do your initial deployment with the protocol you are most comfortable with. As your VMware deployment grows and evolves, you can add additional protocols to match new requirements. If you have not deployed Fibre Channel or are looking for cost-effective connectivity deployment, iSCSI may be the right fit. As more virtual machines are rolled out, virtual machine templates help to automate and standardize deployment processes. NFS is very effective and efficient for managing virtual machine templates. Having a central storage system that serves multiple protocols to various virtual machines and having this storage system tightly integrated with VMware makes management both simpler and more efficient . For virtual desktops, IP storage (NAS and iSCSI) provides an effective solution to manage desktop images and user data. Finally, as applications with big I/O and throughput requirements are deployed, Fibre Channel protocol may be required.

25 Celerra Innovation Tight integration with VMware
VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager Integration for NFS Celerra Plug-in for VMware EMC Replication Manager for VMware on NFS Production Recovery Makes disaster recovery rapid, reliable, manageable, affordable vCenter Site Recovery Manager automated failover/failback ESX servers Increase storage efficiency while maintaining operational integrity Celerra unified storage Common replica management for VMware on NFS, iSCSI, and Fibre Channel VMware infrastructure WEB1 OS WEB2 APP1 APP2 SQL RM IP network The EMC Celerra Plug-in for VMware provides VMware administrators the ability to easily manage NFS data stores, including provisioning, cloning, and deduplication. This plug-in is the latest in a series of vCenter Server plug-ins that address areas of storage management, VMware View deployments, and disaster recovery. It provides three major function/feature sets: Provisioning of NFS data stores: Create new file systems or enlarge a file system; file systems are created by default with EMC and VMware best practices Storage optimization of virtual machine storage: Use Celerra data deduplication support for large and active files; a VMware administrator can compress any or all virtual machines in a NFS data store and can uncompress any virtual machine Fast clones and full clones of virtual machines: Create one or more copies of virtual machines Full copies: Same size as original Fast copies: Pointer-based; size equals amount of unique data EMC has ported Replication Manager to Celerra NFS. Replication Manager provides host-based management of array-based data replication. Through application integration, it provides consistent copies of application data sets. Replication Manager gives you the ability to schedule and manage the replication of NFS data stores using Celerra CPU cycles, so there is no impact to VMware or application performance. Upon a predetermined schedule or upon user request, Replication Manager initiates the snap process. Replication Manager invokes VMsnap to quiese the virtual machines. VMsnap also invokes Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Services (VSS) integration to cause VSS-enabled applications to flush their data to create application-consistent copies of the data. Replication Manager then invokes Celerra SnapSure to create a thin copy of the entire data store. The copy can be used to recover a single virtual machine, the entire data store, or the source for offline backups using standard backup technology such as EMC Avamar or EMC NetWorker. Celerra Replicator is integrated with vCenter Site Recovery Manager for both iSCSI and NFS to provide data replication of all or part of the VMware infrastructure. This integration allows vCenter Site Recovery Manager to manage the storage infrastructure at the recovery site to automate the restart of virtual machines. vCenter Site Recovery Manager also provides the ability to automate testing of disaster recovery plans and procedures by allowing the administrator to simulate a disaster at the recovery site without affecting production or data protection. This is performed by the recovery array making local data copies and presenting them to the test infrastructure. Celerra has also integrated with Site Recovery Manager to help automate the complex manual process of returning operations to the production site after a disaster. By integrating storage and data management features directly with VMware, virtual desktops and their information may be simpler and more efficiently controlled

30 Celerra The simple and efficient choice Simple Efficient
By now you should have a good understanding of what EMC’s midrange product strategy is centered on: driving increased efficiency and doing so in a simple and intuitive manner. With datasets growing by 10 times every five years, your new storage strategy must be both efficient and simple. EMC has covered why centralized consolidated network platforms must offer universal connectivity—it’s simple and efficient. EMC has covered why dynamically cost and performance differentiated storage pools are the only way forward. No more wasted resources or poorly performing RAID sets and file systems. And EMC has covered why the system must be self managing and self optimizing. A new storage strategy is a reality. New levels of efficiency and simplicity are here. Celerra is that efficient and simple choice. Centralize management Single unified interface for midtier SAN and NAS environments Connect to any protocol NFS, CIFS, pNFS, iSCSI, Fibre Channel, and MPFS —all in one system Consolidate platforms Use the same common infrastructure for virtual and physical applications Set it and forget it Very intuitive GUI lets you deploy sophisticated and advanced services with just a few clicks Optimize service levels Automatically move data to the most efficient storage technology based on activity Reduce capacity and power Reclaim wasted capacity with file-level deduplication and real-time data compression Improve storage utilization Allocate as needed with Thin Provisioning and recycle Flash capacity with FAST Scale as needed Add Flash drives for performance and hard disk drives for up to 2PB of capacity as needed
