Chapter E2 Electric Fields
3
Fields Instead of considering the interaction to be direct from charge to charge it is often convenient to consider fields: charge field charge In place of charge charge
4
Defination of Electric Field Therefore the electric force on any particle is given by the product of the field and the charge: Units of E are? Newtons/Coulomb
5
Vector Definitions x y z C P
6
The field at point P due to a point charge at point C. x y z C P where
7
Visualization of electric fields See pictures on page 28 On your paper, draw the field in the region of space around the dipole below. Raise your hand when finished. +- Think about how a positive particle would move. Lines can never cross each other.
8
The electric field lines show the direction of the electric field. They show the path a positively charged particle would take. Electric field lines never cross one another. Draw on a sheet of paper the lines around a negative point charge. Draw on a sheet of paper the lines around two positive charges separated by a distance “d”.
9
Visualization of electric fields On your paper, draw the field in the region of space around the three equal charges below. + + -
10
Fields from distributions of charges. Very long lines of charge (+ and -) Rings of charge Planes of charge
