I.B. Extended Essays Students will pick a subject within one of the following groups. To find a complete list of allowable subjects, consult the I.B. Vade Mecum

The Extended Essay is a 4,000 word in-depth study of a limited topic within a subject. It is a requirement for all Diploma candidates. It is an opportunity to engage in independent research. It is a chance to get bonus points towards the Diploma total. It should take about 40 hours to complete.

Choose a subject that you enjoy. You may choose any IB subject, but it is usually better to choose one that you are studying. You may not write a Group 2 essay in a language you are studying as A1. (e.g. If you are studying Spanish A1, you may not write an extended essay in Spanish B)

You will be assigned a mentor based on the subject that you choose.

Your mentor may give you limited assistance. The topic should allow you to collect information, analyze and evaluate in depth.

Narrow the focus of the topic down to a research question or hypothesis Get ideas from previous essays Make sure that the question is challenging, but capable of being answered. Keep referring back to the research question as you write the essay.

Avoid Plagiarism! Cite all of your reference material correctly! Keep a list of all references from the beginning of your research. Aim to be 90% finished by August of your 12 th Grade year. Meet the deadlines!
