enterprise system group (ESG) helps you be successful
enabling you to deploy solutions for competitive advantage through: reduced costs simplified operations reduced risk faster reaction to business opportunities What is the new ESG? We provide business and infrastructure solutions that are developed specifically to meet customers’ business needs, and their unique industry processes. We also understand that our vast expertise and the combined number of feet we have on the street alone will not let us be successful in this. Sometimes we have the IP and expertise to complete solution ourselves, and in other cases we have the infrastructure and leverage partner expertise and IP. Clearly, we need to work closely with you and your partners to create competitive advantage for your customers. As you will see, partners are a HUGE and very important part of our strategy. Ultimately our success will be measured by the customers’ ability to exploit their IT environment to create a competitive advantage, and meet their business goals: reduce costs with the shifting economy, return on investment and lowest TCO are top of mind simplify operations infrastructure has become increasingly complex, diverse, and difficult to manage reduce risks high expectations drive the need for always-available customer-facing applications and in addition, with current international uncertainty security and data protection is top of mind and doing all of this while simultaneously reacting faster to new business opportunities businesses that respond most quickly to changing conditions gain competitive advantage Summary: Businesses that can respond most quickly to these ever changing conditions will create sustainable competitive advantage

International Securities Exchange
“OpenVMS is a rock-solid, proven product. It has been battle tested out in the field.” Danny Friel, CIO International Securities Exchange 1st U.S. all-electronic options exchange solution Compaq OpenVMS multi-site, clustered AlphaServer systems, Compaq Reliable Transaction Router, StorageWorks, Windows NT ProLiant gateway systems Partner: OM Technology “We need a technology provider that can adapt with us as we adapt to capacity changes; we need Compaq’s vision for the future.” Gary Katz, COO International Securities Exchange benefits reliability/availability for transaction confidence - market makers and customers depend on exchange always being there transaction speed of <.2 seconds - critical for successful operation scalability - key factor as unpredictable requirements grow cutting edge technology ISE opened May 2000 as the first new stock exchange to be recognized by the SEC in more than 20 years. The International Securities Exchange is an all electronic options exchange. ISE trades stock options, and currently trades about 235 products. ISE’s market makers and customers interact from remote locations around the United States and they interact through the technology that they set up in New York and in New Jersey. ISE is the first to combine auction market with the electronics of an electronic trading system. From ISE Press Release, INTERNATIONAL SECURITIES EXCHANGE GROWS ON SOLID FOUNDATION, issued January 7, 2002: ISE has catapulted to the rank of third largest U.S. options exchange among the nation's five options exchanges during 2001, trailing only the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) and the American Stock Exchange (AMEX). This measurement is based on total volume transacted in all listed options, equity as well as index products, traded during the final quarter of 2001. On May 29, 2001, 1 year after launch, ISE traded its 25-millionth contract and its 50-millionth contract on October 3, 2001, doubling its first year's volume in only four months. By year-end 2001, ISE traded in excess of 72 million contracts since launch. “Compaq as our technology solution was very important from two aspects. Number one, we needed to go with a technology that we knew was going to be reliable, that was going to be bullet proof, that had years and years of experience running mission critical applications. The second aspect is our ability to grow and be at the forefront at this incredible growth that we're seeing today in the options industry. And the fact that Compaq has always been at the forefront in chip technology and being able to handle very high transaction rates was very important to us and very important to our ability to stay ahead of that growth in the options industry.” Dan Friel, Chief Information Officer “Well, certainly we see incredible growth in the options industry. And it's important for the ISE to be at the forefront of that growth. Along with that growth comes astronomical transaction rates, and we've got to be able to handle those transaction rates as the industry grows. The processing capacity that we're able to observe within our systems now gives us a lot of confidence that we'll be able to meet those challenges going forward. And the scalability that we've designed into our architecture makes me very confident that we'll be able to partner with Compaq in building a system that will meet the challenges of the future.” Dan Friel, Chief Information Officer “Speed is critical for an electronic market. Without it there is no savings over a floor based model. To be able to send in your orders and receive confirmation of a trade in under .2 seconds is critical to our success. More importantly, to be able to cancel an order that’s resting on the book in under .2 seconds is critical to the success of the exchange. We need Compaq to be able to deliver that type of turn around time.” Gary Katz, Chief Operating Officer

driving the mobile messaging explosion
Vodacom “Sema, together with Compaq, have allowed us to become very successful in the current SMS arena. We believe that partnering with global expertise we can make our future business even more successful. Currently we do in excess of 300 million messages per month on the Vodacom network. We envisage to double the current monthly totals and exceed those by the end of 2002.” Eric Valentine, Director Value Added Services, Vodacom driving the mobile messaging explosion solution Short Messaging Service Center (SMSC) Solution based on OpenVMS AlphaServer systems Partner: SchlumbergerSema benefits reliability/availability - the short message service center is the heart of the messaging system scalability - key factor as unpredictable requirements grow, particularly with exploding mobile messaging growth performance - volumes of messages must be processed and delivered quickly; some operators reporting messages per second In the telecommunications market, we are building the solutions that are helping suppliers manage the change to the next generation of overall network capabilities, both in their core infrastructure products and in their business operations. Today, Compaq supports many of the largest telecommunications companies around the globe. Our solutions are focused on a number of distinct areas within the telecommunications market including the Enhanced Services Market with solutions such as a Short Messaging Solution Center (SMSC). Mobile messaging, including Short Message Service (SMS), Unified Messaging, Multi-Media messaging, and Voice Messaging has exploded in the last several years--particularly SMS. The GSM Association has reported that monthly global volume of Short Message traffic is growing exponentially and is projected to soar to 100 billion messages by Vodacom, a wireless operator in South Africa, has deployed Compaq and SchlumbergerSema’s SMSC to deliver Short Message Services to Vodacom’s mobile subscribers. Currently, Vodacom is delivering 300 million messages per month and is expecting that to double by the end of 2002. The SMSC solution that Vodacom deployed was developed by SchlumbergerSema and runs on Compaq OpenVMS AlphaServers. The SMSC must be scaleable to handle the explosive growth that is happening with mobile messaging. The solution must also be capable of processing these large numbers of messages rapidly and reliably.

the right choice: Volume Economics More Developers, Apps, Solutions Greater R&D, Investment, Re-Investment Lower TCO… Greater $/Performance Faster Innovation Choice Flexible + customized solutions Confidence Long term computing infrastructure Investment Protection Leading Ecosystem Vendors (Intel-based Solutions) >$19.0B1 2000 R&D Spending ($B) Don’t focus on the numbers, just the scale……….huge investment by the industry in IA. You should fall short of saying that SUN is up a blind alley but you should have the audience get the idea…….might want to mention IBM Power too. Note: didn’t include NEC R&D as in 1999 info Comparing the R&D spending for Intel, Msft, Cpq, Dell, HP, IBM, & SGI to that of Sun…. it’s readily apparent once again that the horizontal industry enables the overall market to grow and win. The difference is even great when one considers that the Horizontal Industry brings more developers, applications, and solutions as well as R&D investment/re-investment. This leads to lower TCO and cost of deployment as well as greater $/perf. The result is faster innovation and for the customer the best choice possible of flexible and customized solutions to meet their business needs. History shows it’s the winning strategy so customers can be assured their investments are protected and they can be confident and assured of the long-term viability and industry support of their computing infrastructure.
