Blues music started in America in the 18 th century because Africans, who were forced to be slaves, were not free and couldn’t do their own things so they expressed their sadness and sorrow in music. Blues music was often about love and characters in trouble. They used drums, shakers tambourines, anklets, wood blocks, scrapers that were made with jaw bones, strings and fiddle with curved bow. The African slaves made a type of singing called ‘call and response’ where the singer sings the first half of each line and then the response is made by the guitarist or other instrumentalists. Country blues developed in the rural areas of Mississippi and Texas whereas city blues was a more sophisticated sound often backed by a piano or a complete band. Robert Johnson, from Mississippi, was a passionate singer and a brilliant guitarist whose recordings have inspired many blues guitarists. The African slaves were set free in 1865 but freedom was worse than slavery for many of the black Americans because they were held down by appalling poverty and were deprived of any privileges.
