Caesar’s English Lesson VII
2
AMAT means love. An amorous feeling is full of love; an amateur is not a professional, but just someone who loves to do something; and amity is the loving friendship in a town!
3
LUNA means moon. A lunar landing is on the moon; a lunatic was once thought to be driven mad by the moon; and sublunar refers to things happening under the full moon!
4
GREG means group. To congregate is to group together; to segregate is to put a group apart; and gregarious means to stay in groups, as cattle do in a field.
5
CLAM means cry out. A clamor is a great outcry; an exclamation is a loud cry from someone; and to declaim is to make a speech noisily!
6
TANG means touch. A tangle is a mess in which everything is touching everything in a knot; a tangent is a line that touches a circle; and intangible job benefits are those you can not touch, such as being interested in your work!
7
Advanced Word: Gregarious
The adjective gregarious (greh-GAIR-ee-us) contains the stems greg (group) and ous (full of). Gregarious means sociable, and some species are more gregarious than others. Cattle are gregarious; we often see them in one corner of a field, or under one tree, together. Human beings are gregarious; we love to be together, and most of the time we don’t like to be alone. In speaking of the Fin-back whale in Moby Dick, Herman Melville wrote that “The Fin-back is not gregarious. He seems a whale-hater, as some men are man-haters.”
