(for late grade) 1.Weirdo, Book Two Vocabulary Temperate – moderate, not extreme Spring in the temperate Powhatan begins in early March, erupting out of the muck, the first green shoots spearing up overnight. Meager – lacking in quality, poor, scanty (barely adequate), small Hesitating about what she planned to do, she sat for a moment looking at the meager frame house. Dissect – study carefully As if their heads were mechanically controlled, they looked as one when a choice boy came through the door at Ashburn’s. Then they dissected him. Beacon – bright light; signal light Once Sam turned onto Chapanoke, the juniper-wood house stood out like a warm beacon, the windows welcoming white rectangles. Preliminary – beginning, first “We’ll get a preliminary fix on him by intersecting the two bearings, then one that’s pretty positive with a third. It’s called triangulation.” Dismal – gloomy, dreary “Hunting may be necessary. You wouldn’t want them to starve, would you?’ “No,” Chip said, sighing dismally. Sophisticated – complex, highly complicated, well designed Howling dogs all around, frightened bear up a tree, hunters coming in, aiming rifles with sophisticated sights, firing. Rendezvous – (n.) meeting place, (v.) to meet In the morning, Chip met up with Telford at a rendezvous spot on Trail Seven. Triangulation – technique to measure distance using three points/triangles Aerial – in the air The next two weeks, they spent most of each day aloft in a small Cessna for aerial telemetry tracking the bear at five or six hundred feet, antenna under each wing. Telemetry – device used to measure distances
