Do Now Write your homework in your agenda. Update your table of contents: Fold and attach the notes to page 101. Make a large Venn diagram on page 100. Title one circle “Ionic bonding” and the other circle “Covalent bonding” At the bottom of page 100, try to dissect the word “covalent” and explain what it means from its parts. Covalent Bonds A covalent bond is a chemical bond formed when two atoms share one or more pairs of valence electrons. These bonds are weaker than ionic bonds. Covalent bonds occur between nonmetals only.

Think of it as…
5
Molecule A molecule is another name for a compound that is held together by covalent bonds.
6
Double and Triple bonds Strongest-----------------------------------Weakest Order of bond strength: Triple bond > double bond > single bond Strongest-----------------------------------Weakest Order of bond strength: Triple bond > double bond > single bond
7
Bonds FYI Typically the electrons shared in a bond are drawn as a straight line. 1 line for each pair of electrons.
8
Double and Triple bonds In a single covalent bond, two electrons are shared between two atoms. In a double bond, 4 electrons are shared between two atoms. In a triple bond, 6 electrons are shared between two atoms. The more bonds between the atoms, the stronger the bond is.
9
Polar A molecule that has an unequal sharing of electrons is called a polar molecule The more electronegative an atom is, the more it hogs the electrons.
