1.Explain refers to one of the five purposes for writing. Writing to explain tells readers what something means, tells how something works, and/or tells why something happens. 2.Position refers to the stance a writer has on a particular topic, usually referred to in opposition of another position. 3.Purpose refers to a reason a writer has for creating a particular text. Often, a writer combines two or more of these in a specific text: 1.To entertain 2.To explain 3.To explore 4.To inform 5.To persuade

4. Reflective refers to writing that is contemplative and thoughtful. Typically, reflective writing is analytical and offers insight into a writer’s own argument, writing process, and product. 5. Shift refers to a change in the passage. For example, point of view may shift from third to first person. Diction may shift from formal to informal. Pattern of development may shift from narrative to analysis. Syntax may shift from short to long sentences. Shift within a passage indicates an area of emphasis, as the change purposefully affects meaning. 6. Structure refers to two things. The form (genre) of the passage and the method of development within it. When analyzing structure, identify the mode or modes the author is using and what effect the modes have on the passage as a whole.
