Outline Animal sciences … an identity crisis? About the American Society of Animal Science (ASAS) … an infomercial. Animals, Science and Service

The Beginning Began on Jul 28, 1908 at Cornell University. Animal nutritionists representing 13 agricultural experiment stations and USDA formed permanent organization with focus on animal nutrition research. Plan for organization presented during International Livestock Exposition in Chicago that fall. American Society of Animal Nutrition was formed on Nov 26, 1908. Name changed to American Society of Animal Production in 1915. Official name became American Society of Animal Science in 1961. Animals, Science and Service

“My advice to young professionals in animal science is to join ASAS and get involved — it will be the best investment of time and energy they could ever make.” Dr. Michael Galyean Professor in the Department of Animal and Food Sciences, Texas Tech University and ASAS member for 35 years Animals, Science and Service

“Opportunities through ASAS allow graduate students to take an active role in discussing research with colleagues, network with university and industry professionals, gain valuable career skills, and become a more active face of animal science. Heather White ASAS Graduate Director Animals, Science and Service

“I became an ASAS member to attend my first sectional meeting. Five years later, my ASAS membership has allowed me to travel to conferences across the country, helped me network with future employers and colleagues, and further developed my leadership abilities.” Cassie Jones ASAS Graduate Director Animals, Science and Service

“Some of our newest activities have put animal sciences in new places: On Facebook, Twitter, a blog, Washington, D.C., and universities and companies across the world. Graduate students are very involved in all of these ventures.” Heather White ASAS Graduate Director Animals, Science and Service
