Background Donatello was a Italian Renaissance sculptor His birth name is Donato di Niccolo di Betto Bardi. He was born in Florence Italy around 1386 He died in Florence Italy on December 12, 1466

Education His father was Niccolo di Betto Bardi, a member of the Florentine Wool Combers Guild. He was educated at the home of the Martellis They were a wealthy and influential family of bankers and art patrons. Donatello

First Job Donatello apprenticed with Ghiberti. He assisted Ghiberti in creating cathedral doors for the Baptistery of the Florence Cathedral. He also had a close relationship with Cosimo de Medici

Art Style Donatello was known for his life like emotional sculptures. His sculptures were more classical and were different from the Medieval style because they have more depth. He was the first Renaissance artist to create a nude statue Equestrian Statue of Gattamelata St. John the Evangelist

Famous Pieces Donatello styles added perspective to his sculptures. Sculptors previously used a flat background that the figures were placed on. His sculptures showed emotions and different body positions. David (Marble) Madonna with the Child

The David Donatello's most famous is the David. David was first done in marble. The statue was later done in bronze David represented triumph over brutality. The bronze David is the first nude statue of the Renaissance. David
