While Colbert’s reporting on the inaugural events is sometimes hilarious, his point of view as a radical right-wing conservative leads him to exclude evidence that would contradict his claims, resulting in a portrayal of Mr. Obama that is patently unfair. As he begins his coverage of the inauguration, Colbert hurls the first arrow at Obama’s integrity by alleging that, in being sworn in on both January 20 and January 21, the president has not only flouted the US Constitution by taking his oath of office for the second time on January 21; he has thoroughly desecrated it by establishing, with the repeated oath, that he will be a third- term president (2 nd and 3 rd terms to be served consecutively, according to Colbert). In rushing to condemn the president, Mr. Colbert neglects to inform his audience that when January 20—the day the Constitution sets aside for the president to take his oath—falls on a Sunday, it is customary for presidents to be sworn in both on that day and again on the Monday following, so that those who observe the Sabbath as a day of reverent worship can participate in the inaugural festivities. In fact, seven past presidents have done the same, setting a precedent that undeniably frees President Obama from blame or accusations of evil intentions.... (to be continued)
