2. 2 Colonists Worship As They Please According to the Proprietor's charter, the official, tax- supported church of Carolina was the Anglican Church (the Church of England), yet the Proprietors had done nothing about setting up the Anglican Church in the colony. Instead, they had allowed the members of any Protestant group to worship as they pleased. People who dissented from, or disagreed with, the beliefs and rituals of the Anglican Church were called Dissenters. The most numerous of the Dissenters among the colonists were the Quakers.

3. 3 Anglicans Try To Take Over Under the governorship of Proprietor John Archdale (1694- 1696), himself a recent convert to the Quaker faith, there were more Quakers than people of any other religion in the government of Albemarle. This situation worried the Anglicans, who were anxious to see the Anglican Church take on what they felt was its rightful role in the colony. These people received some encouragement when an Anglican, Henderson Walker became governor in 1699. The new governor convinced the legislature to pass the first church law in North Carolina.

4. 4 Quakers Protest In 1703, another law was passed. This one required that Assemblymen be Anglicans and that officials take an oath of allegiance to the English queen before taking office. Swearing such an oath was against Quaker belief. To the distress of the Quakers, Robert Daniel, Walker’s successor, enforced the law.

5. 5 Carolina Becomes Two Colonies The political struggle between Anglicans and Quakers finally convinced the Proprietors that they needed a more effective government in the northern part of the colony. They decided to appoint a governor of North Carolina independent of South Carolina’s governor. They chose Edward Hyde, who took the oath of office as the first governor of the colony of North Carolina on May 9, 1712.

6. 6 South Carolina Sends Help The Tuscarora attacks created a very difficult situation for Governor Hyde. For help, he turned to South Carolina. The colony gave a large sum of money and sent troops consisting of about 30 colonists and 500 of their Native American allies. Under the command of Colonel John Barnwell, this force defeated the Tuscaroras in two battles near New Bern in January 1712.
