Exodus 20:7 “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.

The Command “You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain,”

The Command “take”: carry or to bear or to lift up
It carries with the idea to verbalize one's allegiance lifting or carrying something on your lips “vain”: with no purpose, void, empty or with evil intent

The Command Don’t take the name of God on your lips in such a way that it will be without purpose or evil intent. It should always have meaning.

The Consequence “for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.”

Name: Synonymous with one’s character, reputation, and authority.
God’s name reveals His essence. Summary: We are to take God’s name seriously.
